FC Augsburg – 1. FC Köln
What could be better than sitting together with the family at Easter and watching the Bundesliga conference? This Saturday, five exciting games await you there. On the Lech, two teams will meet that, with a bit of bad luck, could still slip into the relegation battle. FCA receives the Geißböcke from the cathedral city. Both teams would probably secure their place in the German top flight with a win. Find out who will win this important duel in our Augsburg – Cologne tip.
FC Augsburg recently climbed out of the deepest relegation quagmire. FCA have lost only one of their last four Bundesliga games and currently occupy twelfth place in the league with 29 points. In the previous week, it even looked like the Fuggerstädter would win at VfL Wolfsburg for a long time. However, Augsburg squandered a 2-0 lead and eventually drew 2-2 with the Wolves.
The guests from Cologne are also still fighting against relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga. The Geißböcke are one place and one point behind their upcoming opponents. However, the FC has been without a win for six games in the league. In the previous week, Cologne at least fought their way to a 0-0 draw in the Rhineland derby against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Augsburg Form & Balance Check
Coach Enrico Maaßen has long trembled in the relegation battle with his FC Augsburg this season. In the first half of the season, the Fuggerstädter mostly hovered just above the relegation zone. In the seven Bundesliga games before the winter break, FCA remained winless.
But in the new year, the team came up trumps with its home strength and fought its way out of the danger zone. The Fuggerstädter collected 13 points from their first five Bundesliga home games in 2023 and are currently seven points clear of Hertha BSC in the relegation zone. In their last match against VfL Wolfsburg, Augsburg drew 2-2.
No spectacle in Augsburg
If Marius Bülter hadn’t equalised for Schalke in injury time in the last FCA home game, FCA would even still have an unblemished home record in 2023.However, despite their home strength, Augsburg are not known for their goal-scoring prowess at home. In the first 13 Bundesliga games at the WWK ARENA, FCA scored only 13 goals.
However, the Fuggerstädter are also known for strong defensive skills on home turf. So far, Augsburg have conceded only 17 goals at the WWK ARENA. Since the beginning of November, the team from the Lech has never conceded more than one goal per home match.
Augsburg facts & analysis
– Currently 12th in the Bundesliga with 29 points.
– Weakest home attack in the league
– Five times to nil in the Bundesliga
Cologne form & balance check
The sporting situation is currently very tense at 1. FC Köln. The Geißböcke started very solidly into this season, but are currently slipping further and further into the relegation battle. In the second half of the season, the Cathedral City side has only managed one win so far.
Coach Steffen Baumgart’s team has now gone six games without a win in the league. In the previous week, however, FC managed another draw. Cologne drew 0-0 with Gladbach in the Rhineland derby. FC once again created a number of goal-scoring chances, but their effectiveness left a lot to be desired.
Away weakness
On the third of September last year, 1. FC Köln won 4:2 in Wolfsburg. However, this result now seems unthinkable for FC. For one thing, Cologne is extremely weak away from home this Bundesliga season. For the Geißböcke, the success in Wolfsburg was the only three-goal win on a foreign pitch this Bundesliga season.
On the other hand, FC seem to have lost the ability to score goals. In the last six Bundesliga games, Cologne scored only one meagre goal. In ten of the last 16 Bundesliga games, the Geißböcke have not scored a goal of their own.
Cologne facts & analysis
– Only one win in last ten Bundesliga games.
– In 16th place in the second round table
– Ten away games in the Bundesliga without a win
Predicted line-up – last update on 6 April 2023
By now, Augsburg are very familiar with the 4-4-2. Felix Uduokhai will probably be back in the squad at FCA after his injury. However, it will probably not be enough for the starting eleven yet. Fellow centre-back Reece Oxford will miss Augsburg after being sent off in the second-team match. Demirovic is also still suspended.
We expect Cologne to again play in a 4-2-3-1 against FCA, with Selke likely to again provide a scoring threat up front. Kainz will play behind him. Thielmann and Maina will put pressure on the outsides.
