Atlético Madrid vs. Villarreal CF
It’s not just in Germany that the ball will be rolling again next weekend. Also in the other European top leagues, such as the Spanish La Liga, another matchday is scheduled in the next few days. This Sunday, for example, is the 2nd matchday in Spain and fans can look forward to the game between the Rojiblancos from Madrid and the Yellow Submarine from Villarreal. Find out who we think will come out on top in our Atlético – Villarreal tip.
The first matchday in the Spanish La Liga is over and if we look at the current table, which is not very meaningful, then we can expect the duel one against two on Saturday. Both teams have started the new season with a 3:0 and both teams will not lack the necessary self-confidence. We expect a racy duel from 19:30 and certainly a goal or two.

Atlético Form & Balance Check
Where is Atlético Madrid heading this season? This is a question not only pundits are asking, but also Atletico’s own fans. Even though it was enough for third place last season and thus secured qualification for the top flight, the season was still a little unusual. Unlike in previous years, where the defence was the showpiece, the back line emerged as the Achilles’ heel early on. With the departure of Luis Suárez, Atletico is also lacking a real goalscorer. Hopes therefore rest on Griezmann. The 2018 World Cup winner must deliver this season.
Who will score the goals?
Even though the men from Madrid have several goal-scoring players in their own ranks with players like Felix, Griezmann, Correa or even Morata, all of them were guilty of something in the last season. Coach Simeone also has to deliver this year, otherwise his chair could start to wobble. At least there was a convincing 3-0 win at Getafe at the beginning of the season. The goals came from Alvaro Morata with a brace and Antoine Griezmann. Let’s just hope that both can maintain this early form.
Atlético facts & analysis
– Only invested in defence.
– Last win 3:0 against Getafe
– Little power in the defence
Villarreal form & balance check
After last season’s sensational campaign in the Champions League, in which they even beat FC Bayern in the quarter-finals, Villarreal are expected to aim high again this season. Coach Unai Emery’s men are therefore aiming for one of the top four places again and if we are honest, the Yellow Submarine has plenty of potential to surprise the big teams in the country. Especially the attack is extremely well-staffed and players like Danjuma, for example, could be kept. To start with, Villarreal won their game 3-0 against Valladolid.
Will the Yellow Submarine upset Atletico?
We strongly suspect Villarreal haven’t changed much about their style of play in the new season either. If the Yellow Submarine takes the same approach as last year, Atletico will have their work cut out for them. Danjuma, in particular, was always a danger with his explosiveness. In the first game, however, it was above all Nicolas Jackson who impressed with his manner. The 21-year-old striker is now expected to mix up Atletico’s defenders and create danger.
Villarreal facts & analysis
– Won the first game 3-0.
– Are top of the table
– Want to get back to Europe
Predicted line-up – last update on 19 August 2022
As the line-up suggests, Atlético Madrid will not want to risk much in the upcoming match. Coach Simeone is banking on a five-man backline, where the two newcomers Witsel and Molina will play. In attack, it will probably come down to the double top of Griezmann and Morata again. Upcoming opponents Villarreal, on the other hand, will go for a classic 4-4-2, with Jackson again eligible to play alongside Moreno after his goal against Valladolid.
