Atalanta Bergamo – Bologna

A real top-of-the-table clash for the Champions League places is on the cards when Atalanta Bergamo, in third place, host Bologna, who are just one point behind. A win at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza would put both teams in a strong position heading into the final stretch.

Atalanta have lost three of their last five league games, with their most recent 1-0 loss to Lazio showing a distinct lack of firepower. Charles De Ketelaere will be out for around 20 days with an adductor injury, further weakening their offense. Bologna, on the other hand, are coming off four wins and a draw in their last five league games and will be full of confidence despite the absences of first-choice goalkeeper Skorupski and midfielder Ferguson, who are both out for three weeks. The Rossoblu have also come out on top in their last two meetings with Bologna, winning four of the last five encounters and drawing one, including a 1-0 win in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals and a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture. Bologna have a habit of scoring in the second half and have not lost to Atalanta in their last game – a trend that the Bergamo outfit will be desperate to end.

Atalanta form & record Check

Atalanta are currently going through a difficult phase and have only won once in their last five league games. Particularly worrying is the team’s ongoing inability to score: they failed to score against Lazio (0-1), Fiorentina (0-1) and Inter (0-2). Despite solid approaches, the necessary precision in front of goal is missing.

The loss of Charles De Ketelaere is also a serious blow, as he will be out for around 20 days with a muscle injury. The strikers Mateo Retegui and Ademola Lookman have not been able to return to their former form recently, which is why coach Gian Piero Gasperini is looking for solutions intensively. Statistically, Atalanta are particularly dangerous in the first half: in all of the last five games, no goal was scored before half-time and overall, 80% of these games stayed under 2.5 goals. With just a one-point lead over Bologna, another defeat could even see them slip out of the Champions League places.

Despite personnel worries, Gian Piero Gasperini is likely to stick with his proven 3-4-2-1 system. The Nerazzurri have to cope with the loss of Charles De Ketelaere, who is out for around 20 days with an adductor injury. Gianluca Scamacca and defensive leader Scalvini, who will be out for longer, are also unavailable.

Carnesecchi is expected to be in goal, while Djimsiti, Hien and Kolašinac will form the back three. De Roon and Éderson will be in the central midfield, flanked by Bellanova and Zappacosta. Offensively, Cuadrado and Lookman could support striker Retegui. If more creativity is needed, Pašalić would be an option to give the attack new impetus.

Bologna Form & Record Check

Bologna are in impressive form at the moment. Vincenzo Italiano’s team have won four and drawn one of their last five league games and have not been beaten in over a month. They also showed great resilience in their most recent 1-1 draw with league leaders Napoli, despite being forced into changes early on due to the injury of first-choice goalkeeper Skorupski.

In their previous matches, Bologna celebrated a 3-0 win over Empoli in the cup, a 1-0 away win in Venice and a convincing 5-0 win over Lazio. The team has shown great strength, particularly in the second half, scoring after the break in four of their last five matches. However, Italiano will have to do without both Skorupski and Ferguson for around three weeks. Riccardo Orsolini is currently the key player in the offense: his accuracy and precision make him a constant danger, while he works together with Odgaard and Ndoye behind striker Castro.

Bologna are expected to field the 4-2-3-1 formation that Vincenzo Italiano prefers. Skorupski is out for around three weeks, so Ravaglia will be in goal. The defense could be made up of Holm, Beukema, Lucumi and Miranda, while Freuler and Pobega will line up in defensive midfield.

Ferguson is also unavailable due to injury. Orsolini, Odgaard and Ndoye are likely to start in a three-man forward line, with Odgaard expected to pull the strings behind striker Castro. Although this formation has been successful recently, Italiano could make possible adjustments due to the absences.

Atalanta – Bologna Head to Head & Statistics

In the last five direct duels between Atalanta and Bologna, the Rossoblu have clearly come out on top: four wins and one draw illustrate their current dominance against the Bergamasque team. Often, no goals were scored in the first half, while Bologna consistently scored after the break.

The only other draw in this period was a 1-1 in September 2024, but before that Bologna triumphed 2-1 and 1-0 in Serie A. The 1-0 in the Coppa Italia also saw Atalanta’s negative streak continue. The Bergamasque side seem to have little answer against this opponent – and that is precisely where Bologna has a further psychological advantage.
