Chelsea -Liverpool Tip

After previously winning six in a row, Liverpool FC have only managed to pick up a single point from their last two games, allowing Manchester City to move further clear at the top of the table. Chelsea FC have also lost ground to the Citizens after only one win from their last four games. The Reds, however, have one game less to play and if they win this make-up game, the gap to the Skyblues will be just six points. If Chelsea do lose on Sunday, on the other hand, the capitals could well bury their Premier League title hopes for good. In that case, the gap would most likely be eleven points. So there is a lot at stake for both teams.

Chelsea Form & Balance Check

After a near-perfect start to the season and eight wins from their opening ten games, Chelsea FC have lost a bit of their composure in recent weeks and months. The Blues have won only two of their last six games. Apart from wins against Leeds United (3-2) and at Aston Villa (1-3), there have been three draws against Everton, Wolverhampton and Brighton and a 3-2 defeat at West Ham United. Especially after the recent 1-1 draw against Brighton, coach Thomas Tuchel was visibly pissed off after the game.

However, his short-staffed team, which had been severely affected by injuries and Corona’s absence and had to cope with the absence of Reece James and Andres Christensen during the course of the game, was not the focus of criticism. The German coach was more concerned with the referee, who had made some questionable decisions against the reigning Champions League winners in some situations. And as if all that wasn’t enough, Romelu Lukaku also recently caused trouble with critical statements.

Storm tank brings unnecessary unrest

“I’m fine physically but I’m not happy with my situation at Chelsea,” Lukaku told Sky Sports. “Tuchel has chosen a different system of play. I will continue to be professional but I am not happy”. His coach was not thrilled with these statements. “I don’t like it because it brings noise that we don’t need”. The Belgian attacker’s interview, especially in the current situation, was “not helpful”.

Chelsea Facts & Analysis

 – 42 points from 20 games
 – Last played 1:1 against Brighton
 – Only 2 wins from last 6 games
 – Drawn 3 of last 4 matches

Liverpool form & balance check

It’s not just Chelsea FC that have gone downhill recently, Liverpool FC have also struggled in recent games with results that could be improved. After six wins in a row, the Reds initially failed to go beyond a 2-2 draw at Tottenham Hotspur before Jürgen Klopp’s side finally suffered their second defeat of the current season at Leicester City (1-0) last Tuesday. “We played a really bad game,” said the German coach after the match. With a little less bad luck, however, it could still have been enough for victory.

Salah with a curious miss

After a foul by Wilfried Ndidi, Mohamed Salah stepped up to take a penalty kick with the score at 0-0 in the 15th minute, but failed to hit Kasper Schmeichel with a half-high left-footed penalty. The ball then came back to Salah, who headed it against the crossbar a few metres from the empty goal. Schmeichel was already beaten at this point. The Egyptian was stunned. For the 29-year-old it was only his second missed penalty in the Premier League.

Chelsea FC are now threatened with a third winless game in a row, which would certainly set alarm bells ringing for the Reds. Statistically, however, things don’t look too bad for Sunday’s game. Liverpool have won their last two Premier League games at Stamford Bridge. Previously, only Blackburn Rovers managed to win three in a row at Chelsea FC in the Premier League in 1993/94 and 19994/95. This season, however, LFC have yet to win any of their three visits to London (3-3 at Brentford, 3-2 at West Ham, 2-2 at Tottenham).

Liverpool facts & analysis
 – 41 points from 19 games
 – Last lost 1-0 at Leicester
 – Only 1 point from last 2 games
 – Won last 2 away games at Chelsea

Predicted line-up – last update on 31 December 2021

The Blues’ list of absentees continues to be long. Reece James and Andreas Christensen were added to the list in the recent 1-1 draw with Brighton. Christensen could be replaced by Trevoh CHalobah against Liverpool. Reece James is expected to be replaced by Marcos Alonso. Apart from that, Kai Havertz and/or N’Golo Kanté could move into the starting eleven.

Liverpool also have to cope with numerous absentees. Andrew Robertson is missing for the last time due to a red suspension. Fabinho returned to the starting eleven against Leicester, as did van Dijk, and could start again depending on fitness levels. Not much else could change from the 1-0 win at Leicester either. Roberto Firmino could replace Diogo Jota in the centre of attack, Keita could come on for Oxlade-Chamberlain.
