1st FC Köln vs. Bayer Leverkusen
Three matches will be played on Sunday to conclude the 9th matchday of the Bundesliga. The first of these is the derby between 1. FC Köln and Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Kick-off is at 15:30 at the Rhein Energie Stadium.
Cologne’s coach Steffen Baumgart is likely to reminisce before this encounter. He played his first Bundesliga match as an active player in 1995 against Bayer Leverkusen. He scored his first goal there, but it wasn’t enough to keep him from losing after 90 minutes. With Hansa Rostock, he eventually lost 1:2. Whether we now trust him as a coach to win against the Werkself and what other predictions we have for this game, you can read now in our Cologne vs. Leverkusen tip.

Cologne -Leverkusen Tip
After a look at the table, this clash can be called a top match for the first time in what feels like an eternity. The Werkself managed to hold on to second place despite the 1:5 defeat against FC Bayern, while the Cologne team finds itself in seventh place after the 5:0 defeat in Hoffenheim. Both teams have played a successful season so far, but have recently had to accept a bitter setback. It will be interesting to see who will show the better reaction on Sunday.
Cologne Form & Balance Check
After a very successful start to the season and only one defeat from the first eight games, 1. FC Köln suffered their first really bitter defeat of the new season at Hoffenheim last weekend. The result was 5:0 after 90 minutes – and the extent to which this result is deserved is debatable. Nevertheless, it can be said that the Cologne team was not at all dangerous offensively on this day. In retrospect, none of the ten shot attempts can be described as a goal-scoring chance worth mentioning.
I’d rather go 0:5 once than 0:1 five times
The hosts didn’t have many more goals, but they were much more effective with their (better) chances. But as the saying goes: better to lose 5:0 once than 1:0 five times and since it was only the second defeat of the season for the Effzeh after the 3:2 defeat against Bayern, the saying applies perfectly to the situation of the Cologne team. Against Leverkusen, Anthony Modeste & Co. now want to show the right reaction and ideally take three points again. A derby win against the current runners-up would be a great sense of achievement.
Cologne facts & Analysis
12 points from 8 games
– Lost 5:0 at Hoffenheim last time out
– Lost 7 of last 14 home games against Leverkusen
– Scoreless at Hoffenheim for first time in 8 games
Leverkusen form & balance check
The visitors from Leverkusen went into the top match against FC Bayern Munich with great expectations after three wins in a row, but they couldn’t even come close to living up to them. Already in the 3rd minute Robert Lewandowski gave the Munich team a 0:1 lead. Until the 30th minute it was a relatively even game, but Leverkusen are probably still looking for an explanation for what happened next. Within seven minutes, Bayern increased their lead from 0:1 to 0:5 by the 37th minute.
Werkself with 4th derby win in a row?
The Werkself were lucky that the record champions had gone down a few gears in the second half. Otherwise, this match could have ended in an even more embarrassing debacle than it already was. Leverkusen may have a strong team in terms of play, but against an incredibly strong team like FC Bayern, this style of play might not have been the best choice. Now Gerard Seoane’s team wants to show the right reaction with the fourth derby win in a row. Otherwise, Bayer would remain winless in their third consecutive competitive match after the defeat against Bayern and the 1-1 draw in the Europa League against Real Betis.
Leverkusen facts & analysis
– 16 points from 8 games
– Last lost 1:5 against Bayern
– Last 3 derbies won against Cologne
– Still unbeaten away – 2nd place in away table
Predicted line-up – last update on 22 October 2021
For the hosts, the filling of many positions is still open. In addition to the eleven we have listed, Ondrej Duda, Sebastian Andersson, Kingsley Ehizibue and Jorge Mere also represent other starting eleven alternatives. Key player Ellyes Skhiri is out for the time being with a calf injury.
On the Werkself side, there could be a few rotations due to the English week. On the wings, we expect Moussa Diaby and Amine Adli. Robert Andrich could move into the starting eleven after his goal against Betis. Edmond Tabsoba could also return to the starting eleven after a long injury.
Jan Thielmann made his Bundesliga debut two years ago as a 17-year-old – in a 2-0 home win against Leverkusen. In this interview, he remembers his debut, talks about his development – and tells us what it’s finally time for against Leverkusen. 💬👇 https://t.co/Uxb5GmwbMW
