West Ham – Tottenham Hotspur

A London derby with relegation fears hanging over it: West Ham United (17th in the table) and Tottenham Hotspur (16th) are only one point apart going into the final matchday – which means every tackle at the London Stadium is a matter of survival. The Hammers have been waiting for a win for seven league games and threw away a 2-1 lead in Brighton in the closing stages. Tottenham, on the other hand, just celebrated a convincing 3-1 win over Bodø/Glimt in the Europa League under Ange Postecoglou, but could set a negative record with 19 league defeats. Both teams are plagued by injury worries: West Ham will continue to be without Michail Antonio and Crysencio Summerville, while Edson Álvarez is doubtful. Bergvall is definitely out for Spurs, while Son, Maddison and Solanke are all major doubts. On top of that, Tottenham have failed to win any of their last four away games at the London Stadium. The recipe for Sunday: lots of pressure, plenty of derby venom – and possibly plenty of goals again.

West Ham form & record check

The Hammers have gone seven league games without a win. Two draws and three defeats in their last five games – time and again, late mistakes have ruined their day. Remarkably, every first half has ended goalless recently, with the team only becoming more courageous after the break. Defensively, however, they are almost routinely leaking goals; in four of their last five games, West Ham have been behind at half-time. The goal difference of -19 underlines the problems. Without Antonio and Summerville, the team lacks pace, and Álvarez’s possible absence leaves a hole in midfield, so Graham Potter continues to rely on a back three despite experimenting with different systems and hoping for Bowen’s efficiency. 36 points mean 17th place – an alarm signal without immediate relegation fears, but with a lot of pressure.

Potter is likely to stick with his 3-5-2: Areola; Wan-Bissaka, Todibo, Mavropanos, Kilman, Emerson; Paquetá, Ward-Prowse, Souček; Kudus, Bowen. Álvares remains the big question mark – if he is unavailable, Ward-Prowse and Souček will have to shore up the midfield. Fullkrug or Ferguson will serve as wild cards as long as Antonio is out.

Tottenham form & record check

Tottenham polarises: efficient in Europe, moody in the league. Five Premier League games: two wins, three defeats – not a single draw. Spurs scored at least one goal in each of these games, with four of them seeing three or more goals in total due to a shaky defence. The 1-5 defeat in Liverpool stands as a reminder of their lack of balance. The squad is looking thin: Son and Bergvall are out, Maddison and Solanke are injured, and Drăgușin is already out of action. Postecoglou has to rotate, which kills the rhythm. The table? One point ahead of West Ham, one behind Everton – Tottenham is oscillating between European euphoria and league risk.

Spurs are planning their usual 4-3-3: Vicario; Porro, Romero, van de Ven, Udogie; Bissouma, Bentancur, Kulusevski; Johnson, Richarlison, (questionable) Solanke. Son and Bergvall are out, Maddison could come off the bench at most. The focus will be on quick transitions down the wings – Postecoglou needs pace to put West Ham under pressure early on.

H2H West Ham – Tottenham Head-to-head comparison & statistics

The last five derby matches: two wins for West Ham, two for Tottenham, one draw. Without exception, at least two goals were scored in each game, with Spurs winning 4-1 in the most recent encounter (October 2024). West Ham failed to keep a clean sheet in any of the five games; Tottenham always scored but also showed defensive weaknesses. In short: there were few moments of calm, and everything points to this match being more of a treat for fans of attacking football than defensive purists.
