Freiburg Form & Balance Check

SC Freiburg has been able to establish a predominantly positive record against 1. FC Heidenheim in Bundesliga history. In five duels in professional football, the team from the Breisgau region celebrated three victories and played out one draw. The only defeat came in a 3-2 loss in Heidenheim last season. However, in the first half of the 2023/24 season, Freiburg got their revenge with a clear 3-0 win – Julian Schuster’s team’s highest Bundesliga victory of the season.

After the 1-0 win at VfL Bochum, Freiburg could now achieve their first two Bundesliga wins in a row since mid-October. The team from the Breisgau region of Germany has proven to be particularly reliable at collecting points at home: with an average of 2.1 points per home game (19 points from nine games), they outperform almost all Bundesliga teams – only FC Bayern Munich (2.8) and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2.4) are better in this respect.

However, they show a noticeable weakness in the final quarter of an hour. SC Freiburg have yet to score a single goal in the last 15 minutes of a game this Bundesliga season – the only club in the league to do so. At the same time, the team has already conceded nine goals in this period – only the upcoming opponents from Heidenheim are even more susceptible here with ten goals conceded.

Standard strength as a success factor?

Freiburg have found some success from set-pieces. In the second half of the season, they scored both their goals from corners – the same number as Augsburg, although the Augsburg goals both came against Heidenheim. Freiburg could therefore be dangerous from dead balls again.

Captain Christian Günter has recently been able to demonstrate his offensive qualities individually. With his 53rd direct goal contribution in the Bundesliga (13 goals, 40 assists), he drew level with Lucas Höler. Only Vincenzo Grifo (118) and Nils Petersen (81) have been directly involved in more goals in Freiburg’s Bundesliga history.

With Eren Dinkci, there is also a former Heidenheim player in the Breisgau squad. The winger, who collected 14 scorer points for FCH last season, has so far only been directly involved in two goals in Freiburg – including an assist in the 3-0 win in the first leg.

Freiburg facts & analysis
  • First time since October that two wins in a row are possible
  • Third-best home team in the league
  • Only one defeat in the last six Bundesliga home games

Heidenheim Form & Bilanz Check

1. FC Heidenheim are deep in the relegation zone and have only collected 14 points after 20 match days – the fewest points ever collected by a Bundesliga team in 16th place at this point in time since the introduction of the three-point rule. In addition, Heidenheim have already conceded 14 defeats – the same number as VfL Bochum and Holstein Kiel. This means that for the first time in the Bundesliga, there were three teams with at least 14 defeats after 20 match days.

Since the beginning of October, Heidenheim has only managed to get five out of a possible 45 points – no other team has done worse in this period. FCH are still without points in the second half of the season too. By way of comparison, after three match days of the first half of the season, Frank Schmidt’s team had six points and were in fourth place.

Their weakness away from home remains a major problem. Since the 2-0 win at 1. FSV Mainz 05 at the end of September, Heidenheim have not managed another away win. In their last seven away games, they have only managed one draw and six defeats – a club record they have not broken.

Defensively, the final quarter of an hour remains a particular weak point. No team has conceded more goals in the last 15 minutes than Heidenheim (ten). At the same time, FCH is the only team to have been defeated three times in the second half of the game after a corner kick.

Reunion with old acquaintances

Nevertheless, set-pieces are also a strength: Heidenheim have already scored seven times in the final quarter of an hour this Bundesliga season, while Freiburg are still goalless in this period. In addition, substitute Mathias Honsak has been a ray of hope recently: he scored Heidenheim’s fourth goal of the calendar year 2025 – only Holstein Kiel have scored more with five goals. There is also a special connection to the opponent in terms of personnel. With Jan-Niklas Beste (19) and Eren Dinkci (14), two of the three best Heidenheim scorers from the previous season are now under contract with SC Freiburg.

Heidenheim is therefore under pressure if they want to avoid slipping further into the relegation battle. The Freiburg team is strong at home – but if FCH can play to its strengths, a point is certainly not out of the question.

Heidenheim facts & analysis
  • 14 defeats from the first 20 games
  • Only five points out of 45 since October
  • Six defeats from the last seven away games

We expect SC Freiburg to play again under the direction of Julian Schuster in a 4-2-3-1 system. They will continue to rely on their home strength.

We expect Heidenheim to play again under the direction of Frank Schmidt, also in a 4-2-3-1 system. After seven Bundesliga away games without a win, they will hope for a turnaround.

Freiburg – Heidenheim Head to Head & Statistics

In five previous meetings, SCF have won three of those duels. Heidenheim won one, another game ended in a draw. The goal difference is 10:5 in favor of the Breisgauers.
