FC St. Pauli – FC Augsburg
Our St. Pauli – Augsburg prediction is: Under 2.5 goals – 1.63 odds
- Augsburg has scored only nine goals in nine away games
- St. Pauli has the second-best defense in the league
- This bet would have worked in three of Augsburg’s last four league games
The Bundesliga is about to enter its 20th matchday next weekend, which means that we can look forward to exciting encounters again. The relegation battle in particular is currently hotting up, and it is still completely open which teams will have to go down to League Two at the end of the season and which teams will avoid relegation. On Saturday afternoon, newly promoted St. Pauli will face direct neighbors from Augsburg, and even though both teams have a fairly solid distance to the relegation places, they want to take the next three points in this duel.
The Hamburgers were able to secure very important points in the relegation battle with their 3-0 win against Union Berlin on the last matchday, thus moving away from the lower places a little. They now want to continue their two-game winning streak against Augsburg. However, the Fuggerstadters are also in very good form and were able to score three points at home against Heidenheim last weekend. Which of these in-form teams will go further up the table, you can find out in our St. Pauli – Augsburg tip.

St. Pauli Form & Record Check
St. Pauli is having a very respectable season as a promoted team. In their last five league games, the Kiezkicker have picked up three wins against Union Berlin, Heidenheim and Stuttgart, but they have also suffered two defeats against Frankfurt and Bochum.
The Hanseatic team is currently in 13th place in the table, with a goal difference of 17:21 and 20 points, which is already eight points away from a direct relegation place. With FC Augsburg, they are now facing a very feasible opponent at home, who have often had problems against supposedly weaker opponents away from home.
Defensively strong as an ox
“An attack wins games, defense wins championships”. St. Pauli’s system seems to be based on this motto. So far, they have been incredibly solid in their defensive work and manage to drive their opponents to despair as a unit.
In 19 games, they have conceded only 21 goals, making them the second-best defense in the entire Bundesliga. Only the record champions from Munich are even safer with 16 goals conceded. St. Pauli has kept a clean sheet a total of seven times, once again demonstrating how solid they are at the back.
St. Pauli Facts & Analysis
- 13th place in the table
- Three wins from the last five games
- Last game won 3:0 against Union
Augsburg Form & Balance Check
The Augsburgers had a phase shortly before and after the winter break in which they could not live up to their own expectations. However, with three wins against Union Berlin, Werder Bremen and, most recently, Heidenheim from the last three games, their form seems to have improved significantly.
They are currently in twelfth place in the table with 25 points, just six points behind sixth place, which would be enough for European football. They now have a 13-point cushion between themselves and the relegation zone, so that is not something they need to worry about for the time being.
Not strong enough away from home
However, Augsburg have had to fight hard this season, especially on the road. In nine away games, the Fuggerstadt team have only managed two wins and two draws, losing a total of five times. They also have a very poor goal difference of 9:22, making them the fifth-worst offensive team away from home.
The 5-1 defeat to Kiel was indicative of this away weakness, when they were completely out of their depth from the start against the sturgeons, hardly got a grip and then also lost very deservedly in such a high score.
Augsburg facts & analysis
- Twelfth place in the table
- Six points behind the Europa League
- Last game won 2-1 against Heidenheim
The Kiezkicker will start in a 3-4-3 again under coach Alexander Blessin. The coach will probably trust in the same eleven that did so well against Union Berlin last time out. It is still questionable whether it will be enough for Saad to play, otherwise Afolayan and Sinani would be invigorating elements for the offense.
FC Augsburg will start as usual in a 3-4-2-1. Coach Jess Thorup will also make hardly any changes to the starting lineup. Dahmen will also continue to stand between the posts. The only possible change is Schlotterbeck, who could move into central defense for Banks.
