- The first leg went to Freiburg 2-1
On Saturday afternoon, the Vonovia Ruhr Stadium will host the Bundesliga clash between VfL Bochum and SC Freiburg. In terms of the table, this duel means: bottom of the table hosts tenth of the table.
Bochum is still at the bottom of the league, but the Bochum team has managed to remain undefeated in its last three home games, picking up two wins. However, on the last match day, there was a sobering 0-3 loss in Gladbach. With ten points, however, they are now only four points away from the relegation spot.
Freiburg, on the other hand, is currently going through a difficult phase of the season. Most recently, they suffered three defeats in a row, including a 2-1 loss to Bayern on the last matchday. After two away wins in their first three games, SCF have now gone seven games without an away win. However, they have won their last six duels against Bochum. Whether they will continue this winning streak or whether Bochum will play to its home strengths can be found in our Bochum – Freiburg betting tip.

Bochum Form & Record Check
VfL Bochum is currently facing its longest losing streak against SC Freiburg in Bundesliga history: there have been six consecutive defeats against the Sport-Club – against no other team is VfL currently doing worse. Bochum is playing its historically worst Bundesliga season anyway. With only ten points after 19 match days, the team is in a worse position than ever before in the top flight. In Bundesliga history, only one team has managed to avoid relegation with such a poor tally: Mainz 05 in the 2020/21 season.
At least VfL has recently shown a clear improvement at home. While only two out of a possible 18 points were earned from the first six home games of this Bundesliga season, Bochum has now not been beaten in three home games. In the process, the team collected seven out of a possible nine points (two wins, one draw).
Problems at the back and at the front
However, the offense remains a problem: last matchday, Bochum went a goal-less for the eighth time this season – only FC St. Pauli have a worse record with ten goalless matches in 2024/25. Bochum have also scored only four goals in total this year. This is the second-worst tally in the league behind Union Berlin (two goals).
Defensively, Bochum is particularly vulnerable after the break. The team has already conceded 24 goals in the second half – no other Bundesliga team has conceded more in this period. In addition, VfL has not won in nine league games. Only Holstein Kiel (ten games) have had an even longer dry spell in this respect.
Bochum facts & analysis
- Worst Bundesliga season of the club
- Unbeaten in three home games
- Already eight goalless draws
Freiburg Form & Record Check
SC Freiburg are not exactly starting the game with a tailwind either. The Sport-Club has lost all of its last three Bundesliga games – the last time it had such a negative streak was in January/February 2024. Freiburg last conceded more defeats in a row in April 2019 (four). It is striking that Freiburg left the pitch as the loser just as often in these three defeats as in the previous eleven Bundesliga games combined (five wins, three draws, three defeats).
Julian Schuster’s team are not doing well away from home. Freiburg have not won in seven Bundesliga away games (two draws, five defeats). The last time there was such a long dry spell was in 2020. Freiburg has been particularly vulnerable defensively this year. With twelve goals conceded in the 2025 calendar year, SCF has the weakest defense in the league. The team struggles particularly after the break: 23 of the total number of goals conceded were in the second half.
In addition to the weak defense, Freiburg’s offense is not scoring consistently enough. Ritsu Doan is one of the few bright spots with six goals and three assists. In the 2-1 loss to Bayern Munich, he recorded his ninth direct goal contribution this Bundesliga season, thus already equaling his personal best from the two previous seasons. Only Vincenzo Grifo (twelve direct assists) has done better for SC in this statistic.
SCF without evergreen Kübler
The Black & Yellows also face a key absence in defense: Lukas Kübler is suspended for the Bochum match. The right-back has been in the starting eleven in all 19 Bundesliga games so far and, with four goals for the season, is one of the most prolific players in the team (only Doan with six and Grifo with five goals are better). Kübler is the only Freiburg player, along with Doan, to have started every game under Julian Schuster so far.
Matthias Ginter could play a key role in this. The central defender scored his 22nd Bundesliga goal last time out – 18 of which were from set pieces. Ginter has an unblemished record against Bochum, having won all seven of his Bundesliga meetings with VfL. Among current Bundesliga players, only Julian Weigl (eight wins in eight against Gladbach) and Joshua Kimmich (13 wins in 13 against Schalke, a league record) have an even better record against a particular team.
Freiburg facts & analysis
- Six consecutive wins against Bochum
- Without a win in their last seven Bundesliga appearances
- Least solid in the league 2025
We expect Bochum to return to the 3-1-4-2 system under coach Dieter Hecking. They will try to continue their unbeaten streak.
Freiburg, on the other hand, we expect to play in a 4-2-3-1 system under coach Julian Schuster. They will try to end their winless streak away from home and extend their winning streak against Bochum.
