Union Berlin – RB Leipzig

Our Union Berlin – Leipzig prediction is: RB Leipzig to win – 6.75 odds

  • Leipzig has now been unbeaten in two league games
  • The hosts won 3-0 against St. Pauli last week
  • Union Berlin have only managed a single victory in their last twelve games

This weekend, we can look forward to the 20th matchday of the Bundesliga. Bremen and Mainz will kick off on Friday, followed by some very interesting matches. This includes the top match on Saturday evening, when the Berliners from Berlin will face RB Leipzig at home.

The Berliners are in the middle of a very deep crisis, which was further fueled by the result on the last matchday. Away at St. Pauli, they didn’t see a stitch and lost 3-0 in the relegation battle. The direct relegation places are getting closer and closer and they now urgently need points to be able to swim freely again.

RB Leipzig is also still in a very weak phase. At the weekend, they drew 2-2 against Leverkusen, and then surprisingly lost 1-0 to Sturm Graz in the Champions League during the week. They want to use this game to shoot the frustration out of their system. You can find out whether they succeed in our Union Berlin – Leipzig betting tip.

Union Berlin Form & record Check

The Berliners seem to have fallen prey to desperation in these last few weeks. In the last twelve league games, they have only managed a single victory (2-1 against Mainz), played three draws and otherwise lost every single game. In particular, last weekend’s direct relegation battle against St. Pauli, where they went down 3-0, exacerbated the crisis in the capital city.

They are now in 14th place in the table and also have a goal difference of 16:27. With these 20 points, they still have a six-point lead over the relegation place, but with this form in which Köpenick finds itself, it is always further downwards.

Way too little offense

The biggest problem for the Irons this season is their offense. Even though they have a very hard-working, dynamic attacker in Benedict Hollerbach who loves to run, they are far too harmless in the final third for a Bundesliga club.

In their 19 games, they have scored just 16 goals, making them the worst offensive line in the entire league. They have gone eight games without scoring a single goal and so far have not scored more than two goals in a single league game.

Union Berlin Facts & Analysis
  • 14th place in the table
  • One win in the last twelve games
  • Last league game lost 0:3 against St. Pauli

Leipzig Form & Balance Check

Even Leipzig seems to be lagging far behind its own expectations at the moment. They were already out of the Champions League before the last matchday, but the 0-1 defeat to Sturm Graz is still a bitter disappointment. In the Bundesliga, they have to be careful not to miss out on the premier class completely.

In the last five league games, they have only managed a single win (4-2 against Bremen), conceded two defeats to Munich and Stuttgart, and drawn twice, against Bochum and Leverkusen. The Red Bulls are currently only in fifth place in the table, but are level on points with fourth-placed Stuttgart.

Mediocre away form

One reason for the Saxons’ poor run is their performance on foreign turf. In ten away games, Leipzig have only managed four wins and two draws, and have also been beaten four times. With a negative goal difference of 17:18 and 14 points, they are currently only in seventh place in the away goals table.

In their last three away games, they conceded a 5-1 defeat in Munich, a 2-1 loss in Stuttgart and, after leading 3-0, they had to settle for a 3-3 draw in Bochum.

Leipzig facts & analysis
  • Fifth place in the table
  • One point from the last three away games
  • Last league game 2:2 against Leverkusen

Union Berlin will start again in a 3-5-2, which can also be formed into a 3-4-2-1. Coach Steffen Baumgart will field roughly the same team that started against St. Pauli. It is uncertain whether Rönnow will be fit enough again, otherwise Schwolow would take over again.

As in the last league game, RB Leipzig will start in a 3-4-2-1 formation. However, coach Marco Rose will have to do without the injured Kampl, with Haidara taking his place in the center. Otherwise, Geertruida and Baumgartner are also still options.

Union Berlin – Leipzig direct comparison & statistics

So far, Union Berlin and RB Leipzig have only played each other 16 times. They have met eleven times in the Bundesliga, four times in the 2nd Bundesliga and once in the DFB Cup. The numbers from these past duels are quite even, with a slight advantage for the Saxons, who have already won this fixture eight times. Union Berlin, meanwhile, have won six and only twice has this game ended in a draw. The last meeting, which took place in Leipzig, ended goalless.
