  • Mainz has four points from two away games, St. Pauli has one point from two home games

The top game of a slightly different kind awaits us on matchday 6 of the Bundesliga between FC St. Pauli and FSV Mainz 05. In the table, this duel pits 14th place against 12th place. After FC St. Pauli got their first win of the season last weekend, the Hamburgers now want to build on that at home.

FSV Mainz 05, on the other hand, were beaten by Heidenheim and for the first time this season did not score a goal themselves. Both clubs have only won once this season and are of course hoping to get another one. We expect a very close game because both teams will give their all. St. Pauli Form & Record Check

After a surprising away win against SC Freiburg, FC St. Pauli finally seems to have arrived in the Bundesliga. After four games in which the Hamburgers scored only one goal, they showed their offensive strength against Freiburg. In the 12th minute, Pauli took the lead through Elias Saad. In the 41st minute, Vicenzo Grifo, who is usually a very reliable taker of penalties, missed his spot-kick. This gave Pauli a boost and they scored the 2-0 just before half-time.

In the second half, the Pauli team was lucky twice, as two SC goals were disallowed by VAR. In the 72nd minute, Elias Saad scored the 3-0, completing his brace. This meant that Pauli got their first three points in the end, despite only managing 26.7% possession in the entire game.

Will Pauli break the goal curse?

Before the last game in Freiburg, the lack of goals from FC St. Pauli was a big topic. The question remains whether the game against Freiburg has now broken the deadlock and the offense is really starting to roll.

One thing is for sure: St. Pauli has not scored a single goal at home. The fact that Mainz has conceded a goal in each of its last ten games may give them hope. It will be interesting to see whether the Hamburgers will now really get going in front of their home crowd.

St. Pauli Facts & Analysis
  • Still without a goal at home
  • Only one point at home
  • Upturn with first win and home crowd

Mainz Form & Record Check

Last week, FSV Mainz 05 were beaten at home for the second time this season. The visitors were 1. FC Heidenheim, who took the lead after just 15 minutes with Pieringer scoring the 1-0. After almost 30 minutes, FSV weakened themselves when Hanche-Olsen was sent off with a yellow-red card. In general, Mainz was missing the very strong and creative Nadiem Amiri, who was missing due to a red card from the Augsburg game.

In the second half, FC Heidenheim weakened themselves in the 80th minute, but a few minutes later Jan Schöppner was able to score the 2-0 final score in the 86th minute. In the end, it was a weak performance by Mainz, who, after five games with five points, are unable to build on their strong second-half form.

Can they keep their unbeaten streak going?

The glimmer of hope for Mainz is their unbeaten streak in away games, which has lasted since March after the 1-8 defeat in Munich. After that game, they didn’t lose in their next seven away games, drawing four and winning three. The last time the FSV scored three goals in both away games (Augsburg and Stuttgart) was this season. It remains to be seen whether Mainz can once again play to its strengths away from home against a motivated Hamburg side.

Mainz Facts & Analysis
  • Unbeaten in seven away games
  • At least one goal conceded in each of the last ten games
  • Six goals in two away games this season

FC St. Pauli continues to rely on the proven 3-4-3 system, which is designed for well-organized defense and fast transition play on the flanks. The back three gives the team defensive security, while the wing players play an important role in both defense and offense. However, in the last few games, the offense has gained momentum, which is reflected in a significantly higher goal threat. Sören Ahlers will continue to be absent due to knee problems.

FSV Mainz will again line up in a 3-4-2-1 system. The high pressing and aggressive approach of Mainz should also stress the opponents from St. Pauli again and cause them problems. Mainz can look forward to the return of the playmaker Amiri, who will be back in the lineup after a yellow-red suspension and will further enhance the Mainz game. However, the 05ers will have to do without Hanche-Olsen due to the yellow-red suspension in the game against Augsburg.
