We can look forward to the second matchday in the Premier League this weekend. The battle for the championship and the race for the European places will be very tight again this season. There are several teams that have the potential to finish in the top six and we can look forward to many exciting games. There are several of them on Saturday afternoon.

Tottenham host Everton at home in London and will be looking for their first three-pointer of the season. Despite leading at the break, they only managed a 1-1 draw against Leicester City. Everton, on the other hand, must be careful not to get off to a completely unsuccessful start. Last week, they suffered a 3-0 defeat at home. Tottenham Form & Balance Check

Tottenham are once again aiming to reach the Champions League this season. Last year, they finished fifth in the table, two points behind Aston Villa. And so this year it means that they will not be competing in the top flight. This goal has now been re-established, but Jamie Vardy put the first damper on the first matchday.

After Spurs had led 1-0 away to Leicester City, the 37-year-old’s goal snatched a 1-1 draw, which was also to be the final score. Tottenham find themselves in ninth place after matchday one and now need this home win to stay in contention

Weak second half

At Tottenham, all those responsible must be careful that the performance of the second half of last season is not carried over to this season. While Spurs performed well in the first half of the year, they dropped off significantly in the second half.

Although they won nine and drew three of their 19 games, they also lost seven. The resulting 30 points put them in seventh place in the table for the second half of the season, meaning they would have missed out on European football altogether

Tottenham facts & analysis
  • ninth place in the table
  • Last game only a 1-1 draw after taking the lead
  • Only lost twice at home to Everton since 2008

Everton Form & Balance Check

Everton suffered the logical consequences of their actions last season. Due to financial irregularities, they received an eight-point deduction and even had to fear for their survival in the league. From the middle of the season onwards, they performed well and secured 15th place in the end.

Relegation should no longer be an issue for the Toffees this season, but the first matchday already indicates that it will not be an easy season for them. They were clearly beaten 3-0 by Brighton in their opening game and now find themselves at the bottom of the table, just like a year ago.

Little optimism

The people in charge at Everton will be looking ahead to the upcoming game with little optimism. The past gives them little reason to be. In the last 24 matches, they have won just twice, drawn eleven times and lost eleven times. They have only won once at the London Stadium since 2008. This season, too, there looks to be little chance of them breaking this curse

Everton facts & analysis
  • Last of the table
  • Last game lost 0:3
  • Only five wins away from home last season

Coach Ange Postecoglou will send his team out onto the pitch in a 4-3-3. There is still a question mark over right-back Porro, who had to be substituted in the last game due to injury. Should he not be fit in time, Spence will take over this role. Otherwise, the line-up remains the same as in the last game against Leicester City.

Everton will start in a classic 4-2-3-1 under Sean Dyche. However, the coach will be without right-back Young (suspension), who will be replaced by Holgate. After the 3-0 home defeat, it is possible that the coach will make a few changes. Beto and Ndiaye are options up front and ex-Frankfurter Lindstrom could boost the attacking midfield
