Leverkusen Form & Balance Check
Leverkusen managed to remain unbeaten for the 50th game in a row last weekend. Xabi Alonso’s team struggled in the early stages against Bochum, who put in a good effort. However, a sending-off for Bochum quickly shifted the game and Bayer managed to go into the break with a 2-0 lead.
After the break, the visitors completely dominated the game and made good use of the space offered to them by Bochum. Three goals in the second half meant a 5:0 away win on the one hand and their 27th victory of the current season on the other.
Leverkusen continue to move into spheres that were not thought possible. They have won three and drawn two of their last five league games and have now gone 50 games unbeaten in all competitions. This weekend’s game is one of three they still need to complete a fully unbeaten season. It would be a historic occasion and testament to a job well done.
Home strength
It’s unbelievable what kind of record they will have in this final game. They have won 13 of their 16 home games and drawn just three. That puts them in second place in the home table with one point less than Bayern, but they have also played one game less. The goal difference is particularly impressive. 45 goals scored and only ten goals conceded, that’s the figure Bayer can boast in 16 home games
Leverkusen facts & analysis
- Best defense in the league
- Unbeaten for 50 games
- Won last game 5:0
Augsburg Form & Balance Check
The Fuggerstädter had to face VfB Stuttgart on the last matchday. Augsburg were shown their limits early on and the Swabians took control of the game. FCA did not pose any danger of their own and they were quite lucky that Stuttgart did not score in the first half.
Not much changed after half-time either, apart from VfB’s effectiveness. In the 48th minute, a fine move put the home side 1-0 behind. But even after conceding this goal, it did not look as if Augsburg were able to rally and so it remained a narrow but highly deserved defeat for Jess Thorup’s team.
Augsburg are currently in their weakest phase of the season. Their last win came five matchdays ago and since then they have lost all four games, leaving them in a desolate 16th place in the form table. They have scored just two goals in these last four games and are suffering the consequences in the standings. In the last five weeks, they have slipped from seventh place, which could even be enough for the Europa League, to tenth place and now have no chance of reaching this stage
Defensively vulnerable
Compared to Leverkusen, who are defensively stable, the Fuggerstädter’s back line has serious problems. They have conceded 58 goals in their 33 games, making them the fourth-worst defense in the entire league. They have conceded twelve goals in the last four games alone, underlining their current poor form
Augsburg facts & analysis
- Lost all of their last four games
- Tenth place in the table
- One win from the last seven games
It is difficult to say whether Xabi Alonso will rest his regular players or whether he will see this game as preparation for the two finals. What is certain is that he will start again in a 3-4-3. Frimpong and Grimaldo will probably start on the flanks again for Stanisic and Arthur and Hincapie will also start in central defense for Kossounou. Hofmann and Wirtz could start behind Schick again after the break last weekend.
Jess Thorup will start in a 4-3-1-2 as he did last week, but will be without right-back Mbabu (yellow card suspension). Pedersen will replace him on the outside. Goalkeeper Dahmen and midfielder Vargas are also still questionable. Should they not be fit in time, Koubek will be back between the posts and Maier will start in the center
