FC Augsburg – FC Heidenheim
After the best teams in Europe battled it out in the European Cup during the week, the Bundesliga continues at the weekend. The 25th matchday is on the program and there are four games in the Saturday conference. Among others, FC Augsburg will host newly promoted Heidenheim.
The teams are direct neighbors in the table and are separated by just one point. They form the midfield of the league and are caught between clinching relegation early and looking upwards towards the international qualification places. Augsburg recorded a brilliant 6-0 away win at bottom club SV Darmstadt last weekend. The game will give the team a great boost. Heidenheim, on the other hand, are in a bit of a crisis and have not won in three games.

Augsburg Form & Balance Check
Augsburg put down a big marker with their latest win. In the match against Darmstadt, the score was 5:0 after just 45 minutes and the game was decided early on. This was FCA’s second win in a row, taking a strong seven points from their last four games. Coach Jess Thorup’s team moved up to tenth place in the table and currently have 29 points.
The relegation spot is therefore already twelve points away and Augsburg should have nothing more to do with relegation. Thanks to solid performances, especially since the second half of the season, the team has become an unpleasant opponent for anyone
Demirović excels
One reason why FCA are currently fifth in the table for the second half of the season is the performance of striker and captain Ermedin Demirović. With his brace last weekend, he scored his 13th and 14th goals of the season and also contributed a strong nine assists. In total, Demirović has 23 scorer points and is only ahead of Bayern star Harry Kane in the top scorer list.
He also broke the previous records of Florian Niederlechner and Michael Gregoritsch, who set the record for the most goals per season by an FCA player in the 2019/20 and 2017/28 seasons with 13 goals each.
Augsburg facts & analysis
- Tenth place in the table
- Won last two games
- Fifth best team in the second half of the season
Heidenheim Form & Balance Check
Heidenheim are currently going through a bit of a dry spell. They have picked up just one point from their last three games. In fact, FCH have only won a single game in the eight matches since the winter break. With 28 points at present, the team under the management of Frank Schmidt is eleventh in the table.
Before the season, hardly anyone would have expected Heidenheim to establish themselves so solidly in the middle of the league, as the relegation places are still more than eleven points away. Nevertheless, coach Schmidt emphasizes that his team thinks from game to game and tries every weekend to further consolidate their goal of staying in the league this season
Little possession, most running
Heidenheim’s style of play is clear. They want to be safe at the back and lurk on the counterattack. In addition, there are always dangerous set pieces. With an average of just 43% possession, Heidenheim have the ball in their own ranks the least often of all the teams.
However, they compensate for this with above-average running performance. The average number of kilometers run per game is 121.8, making FCH the league leaders. Heidenheim show how soccer can be played successfully with commitment and passion despite regularly being the underdogs
Heidenheim facts & analysis
- Table position eleven
- Last game lost
- First win in the second half of the season
For coach Thorup, there is little reason to change the starting line-up from last week. In the 4-3-1-2 system, the two double goal scorers Demirović and Philipp Tietz are up front. Fredrik Jensen was still slightly injured during the week. Should he not be fit in time, Arne Engels or Elvis Rexhbecaj are available as options.
Heidenheim will play with a 4-3-3 formation. The recently injured Lennard Maloney and Jan-Niklas Beste could both return to the starting eleven. We also expect Marvin Pieringer to start after his good performance as a substitute in the last game. Kevin Sessa and Stefan Schimmer are options from the bench
Augsburg – Heidenheim head-to-head & stats
Only one competitive match has been played between Augsburg and Heidenheim so far. The first leg of the season gives hope of a great game, as Augsburg won brilliantly 5:2 in mid-October. After Heidenheim led 2:0 after 20 minutes, Augsburg managed to turn the game around before the break and added two more goals in the second half.
The two clubs had already played four friendly matches before this season. In addition to one draw, the Augsburg side only managed one win. Heidenheim are still waiting for their first win in the club’s history against FCA
