Eintracht Frankfurt – Bayern Munich

After the DFB Cup during the week, the Bundesliga continues this weekend. The 14th matchday is coming up and we expect some exciting games again. On Saturday afternoon, Eintracht Frankfurt will face Bayern. One similarity stands out, as both clubs have bitterly experienced what it’s like to be knocked out of the cup against a third division team. The shock for both teams is 1. FC Saarbrücken, because after Bayern, the Saarlanders have now achieved the next sensation and ended the Frankfurt dream with a 2:0 victory on Wednesday evening.

Now it’s back to league action. Saturday’s match is of great importance for both teams. Bayern don’t want to lose any points on league leaders Leverkusen and, in the best-case scenario, even take the top spot should Leverkusen slip up.

Frankfurt want to stay within striking distance of the international places and a defeat could mean a slide into mediocrity. Find out who will come out on top in this game and who will lose out in our Frankfurt – Bayern predictions

Frankfurt Form & Balance Check

Frankfurt are undoubtedly in a crisis at the moment. The 2:0 defeat and thus the exit from the DFB Cup on Wednesday evening against third-division side Saarbrücken was Eintracht’s fourth consecutive defeat in a competitive match. Their last win was a few weeks ago and Frankfurt urgently need to turn things around. The visit of the record champions doesn’t exactly come at the right time.

Their record from the last five games is one draw and four defeats. Despite all this, Frankfurt are still in 7th place in the league and are just two points behind the international places with 18 points. Eintracht are also still in the Conference League, even if they have to take the detour via the play-offs

Defense hangs

Eintracht’s current problem is the defense. The last game without conceding a goal was six games ago and they have conceded two goals in each of their last five games. This appears to be a new problem, as Frankfurt were previously characterized by a strong defence.

With only 15 goals conceded in the league, Frankfurt are among the top three teams when it comes to keeping a clean sheet. Coach Dino Toppmöller must quickly get to the bottom of this problem and stabilize the team as quickly as possible. It remains to be seen whether this will be possible against the overpowering Bayern offense

Frankfurt facts & analysis
  • Seventh place in the table
  • Four defeats in a row
  • Goal ratio of 19:15

Bayern form & balance check

After being knocked out of the cup against Saarbrücken a few weeks ago, Bayern were able to use the entire week to prepare for Eintracht. The Munich side also had an involuntary break last weekend, as the game against Union Berlin had to be called off due to heavy snowfall. Despite the somewhat disappointing draw for coach Thomas Tuchel’s team in their last competitive match against Copenhagen in the Champions League, Bayern are currently in good form.

The team has celebrated four wins in a row and has fully taken on the chasing role at the top of the table. Only one win currently separates Bayern from Leverkusen in first place and a win against Frankfurt could see Bayern overtake Bayer should Xabi Alonso’s team slip up in the parallel match

Müller in the Premier League?

The future of Thomas Müller at Bayern is uncertain and rumors about a possible move for the Bayern veteran are growing. Müller’s contract expires this summer and has not yet been extended. The fact that Müller does not currently have a regular place under Thomas Tuchel is adding fuel to the rumor mill.

There has allegedly been interest from Premiere League club Manchester United, who have disappointed in both the domestic league and the Premier League this season, for some time. However, it is questionable whether a move will actually materialize, as Müller himself recently emphasized his desire to continue working with Bayern and extend his expiring contract

Bayern facts & analysis
  • second place in the table
  • Four wins and one draw from the last five games
  • Goal ratio of 43:9

Predicted line-up – last update on December 8, 2023

Frankfurt are looking for offensive solutions and are still missing a real striker. Against Bayern, we expect the team to play in a 3-5-2 formation, which will become a five-man back line. Should Ansgar Knauff play from the start, Mario Götze could be rotated to the bench again.

We expect Bayern to play in a 4-3-3 system with Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sané on the wings. Noussair Mazraoui has now established himself on the right side of defense

Frankfurt – Bayern head-to-head & stats

In their club history, the two teams have faced each other 110 times. Bayern have won 61 of them, while Frankfurt have won 26 games. 23 matches ended in a draw. The goal difference of 223:134 also speaks clearly in favor of Bayern. The first meeting took place in 1932 and went 2-0 to Munich. The last match was matchday 18 of the previous season and ended 1-1.

  • Bayern clearly lead the overall standings
  • Frankfurt’s last win was in 2021
  • The most goals Bayern scored in a match was 7:2 in 1981
