Arsenal Form & Balance Check
Arsenal have just suffered a damper on their fine start to the season. The Gunners were unbeaten since the autumn and won the Community Shield, but they were stopped in Lens of all places. With an emphatic win over PSV Eindhoven in their first Champions League game in six years, the Londoners travelled to northern France with the intention of moving a step closer to the knockout stages.
Initially, the plan went smoothly. Bukayo Saka intercepted a back pass and fed Gabriel Jesus, who crossed for the lead. As the game wore on, however, the tactical battle shifted to Lens’ side, as the hosts did well to take track players Martin Ødegaard and Kai Havertz out of the game. With Saka out through injury, the game only got worse for the visitors.
Saka missing!
Without their young winger, the Gunners found it much harder to break down the opposition defence. In the end it was Lens who took the lead, first through a mistake by David Raya and then through a wonderful move. They must immediately put this defeat behind them and concentrate on the duel against the English champions.
Without Bukayo Saka, they will lack the offensive arguments. Nevertheless, they know that after their win in the Community Shield, they are capable of beating the Citizens, who recently conceded two defeats in a row in the Premier League.
Arsenal facts & analysis
- Second best defence
- Third in the table
- Still unbeaten in the Premier League
Man City form & balance check
Unlike their opponents today, Manchester City used the Champions League to redeem themselves. Before the game against RB Leipzig, Pep Guardiola’s team had suffered two defeats in a row, the first since January (defeat in the EFL Cup against Southampton and in the league against Manchester United). In the match against Leipzig, however, the Citizens turned up the heat again. Leipzig kept up well for long stretches, but Julian Álvarez put the lid on it in the 84th minute with his goal to make it 2-1.
Back on track?
After this European success, the Sky Blues have to defend their place at the top of the Premier League. They are chased by Tottenham and Arsenal and have the opportunity to get another important win in the still young season.
However, with Tottenham facing promoted Luton Town, Manchester City could lose touch with the top spot in the event of a defeat or draw.
The English champions, who have been without Kevin De Bruyne since August, will need to put in a good performance to avoid leaving the Emirates empty-handed. Likewise, the top-two will have to do without the suspended Rodri. However, Bernardo Silva will be back in the side, having already featured against Leipzig.
