VfB Stuttgart vs. Hertha BSC

There are only twelve days left until the 2022 World Cup starts in Qatar. Therefore, the match schedule this season is tighter than ever. This of course has an impact on the Bundesliga, which is why an English week awaits us this week. The action already continues on Tuesday. There, Hertha BSC in particular faces a very important match. After two defeats in a row, the Old Lady is once again deep in the relegation battle.

Before kick-off, both teams are level on points with each other with eleven points in the table. For both clubs, this duel is therefore all the more important. The Berliners lost 2:3 at the Olympiastadion against FC Bayern on Saturday. However, the team of coach Sandro Schwarz showed an appealing performance after trailing 0:3 in the meantime. In Swabia, BSC wants to be rewarded for this effort.

VfB Stuttgart also lost. Interim coach Michael Wimmer’s team lost 3-1 at Borussia Mönchengladbach. The Swabians were thus unable to build on their previous 2-1 home victory over FC Augsburg. The problems in the VfB team are becoming increasingly clear. Read our Stuttgart – Hertha tip to find out whether the Old Lady from Berlin can break down the Swabians away from home.

Stuttgart Form & Balance Check

VfB Stuttgart once again failed to follow up a win with another treble last weekend. After the Swabians defeated VfL Bochum 4:1 on interim coach Michael Wimmer’s debut, they followed it up with a bitter 0:5 defeat at Borussia Dortmund. However, Stuttgart showed a clear reaction to this defeat. FC Augsburg were beaten 2:1. At the same time, VfB was trailing 0:1. For the first time this season, the Swabians managed to turn around a deficit completely. Anton scored the 2-1 winner in the 91st minute, which was seen as a mental liberation. But there was no sign of this in Mönchengladbach last Friday. Stuttgart lost 3-1 at the Fohlenelf and made the same mistakes they always make.

Early arrears

It’s been a common thread through the Swabians’ season. Stuttgart concede goals far too early in the game, putting themselves in an awkward position to be positive for the rest of the season. Hofmann scored as early as the 3rd minute for a 1:0 lead on Friday. After 25 minutes, the score was already 0:2. The Fuggerstadters also scored against Augsburg in the 4th minute for a 1:0 lead. Before that, BVB led 2:0 against VfB after only 13 minutes. No other Bundesliga team concedes as many goals in the first quarter of the game as Coach Wimmer’s team does.

Stuttgart facts & analysis

 – Stuttgart are in 16th place in the table with 11 points.
 – VfB have won two home games in a row.
 – Most recently, the Swabians lost 1:3 against Gladbach.

Hertha Form & Balance Check

Hertha BSC often deprive themselves of points. That was also the case last Saturday against the record champions from Munich. In a sold-out Olympiastadion, FC Bayern led 3:0 after 38 minutes. The Old Lady kept up well and dominated the first quarter of an hour. But unnecessary defensive mistakes allowed the Munich team to score three times. There were definitely parallels to the game in Leipzig, as the Old Lady was also down 0:3 against RB, without being much worse. Just like in Saxony, BSC managed to turn a 0:3 deficit into a 2:3 score against Bayern.

Against Munich, the Berliners woke up in the 40th minute and played with courage and stability. In the 2nd half, there were again several opportunities like in Leipzig to equalise the game. However, the equaliser did not come, so that the bottom line is the second defeat in a row. The 2-1 home win over Gelsenkirchen was a worse performance than against Bayern in terms of play, but remains the only three points in the last eight games.

Unnecessary goals conceded

For the third time after losing the city derby in Köpenick on Matchday 1 and the defeat in Leipzig, Hertha conceded three goals in a game. The Old Lady was well in the game against FC Bayern, but at times made gross defensive blunders. The two goals by Choupo-Moting simply had to be prevented. The Munich player even scored the 3:0 while lying down.

Already in Bremen, the capital club conceded the 0:1 far too easily. A cross was enough to set the scene for Füllkrug. Looking at the course of the game against Bremen and Bayern, it has to be said that coach Schwarz’s team always played well, but conceded goals far too easily. With 20 goals now conceded, goalkeeper Christensen is conceding 1.5 goals on average.

Hertha facts & analysis

 – Hertha are in 15th place in the table with 11 points.
 – BSC lost two games in a row.
 – The 2-1 win over Schalke is the only one in the last eight games.

Predicted line-up – last update on 7 November 2022

VfB Stuttgart recently deviated from the 3-5-2 system and are playing a more defensive 4-4-2 system under interim coach Wimmer. This way, the Swabians are definitely more structured in generic possession and can act more compactly against the ball. Nevertheless, VfB is on the offensive with a lot of speed. Tomas and Silas form a very dangerous right side that convinces with speed. With regard to the other personnel, interim coach Wimmer can fall back on his entire squad. There are no injuries.

The situation is different for the Old Lady. The two long-term injured players Ngankam (muscle fibre tear in the thigh) and Nsona (knee problems) are still out. Also Jovetic (muscle strain in the hip flexor) and Dardai (tibia inflammation) will not be fit in time for Tuesday’s match. Coach Sandro Schwarz will play in a 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 system. At the moment, the Old Lady is very flexible when it comes to the formation.
