FSV Mainz vs. VfL Wolfsburg
This weekend we officially enter the last Bundesliga week of the year. The upcoming 13th matchday is namely the start of an English week, in which three matchdays of the Bundesliga are scheduled. After that, the clubs go into a somewhat unusually early winter break. This means that the teams can give it their all again, as some will be going on holiday at the end of November.
In the case of FSV Mainz 05, this means that they can make the most of a very strong first half of the season. They are currently in ninth place, just one point off the European places. However, VfL Wolfsburg will have something against that. The Wolves themselves want to rectify their somewhat messed-up start to the season. All important information and three betting tips for this clash can be found here in our Mainz – Wolfsburg betting tip.

Mainz Form & Balance Check
Mainz are slowly but surely becoming a real top team this season. There is plenty of evidence of that. For example, they are only the third team besides Dortmund and Stuttgart to manage to score twice against the record champions from Munich. In addition, they are second in the away table. That puts them ahead of teams like Bayern, Dortmund and Union Berlin. Things have not gone so well at home so far.
Before Mainz’s last home game, a 5-0 win against Cologne, they were in last place in the home table. However, things have improved recently. On the one hand, there was the aforementioned 5-0 win against FC, in which they were outnumbered for most of the time, and on the other hand, they fought their way to a 1-1 draw against RB Leipzig before that. If FSV also start scoring regularly at the MEWA Arena, then things will be looking up for the 05ers.
Guarantee of success Kohr
For months it seems as if FSV Mainz are steadily getting better. They are getting better and better and are more and more often in a single-digit place in the table. And the success has a name: Dominik Kohr. The German moved to Mainz in January 2021. Since then, he has been in the starting eleven in 44 games, of which only a meagre nine games were lost (20%). Without him in the first eleven, Mainz started 20 times, of which 13 were lost (65%). This shows the influence the 28-year-old has on his club. This means that if he is in the starting eleven, the chances of winning a point are very good.
Mainz facts & analysis
– Currently 9th place in the table.
– 2nd place in the away table
– Kohr a guarantee for success
– Ingvartsen scored in each of last 5 competitive games
Wolfsburg form & balance check
VfL Wolfsburg are on the rise at the moment. After a rather missed start to the season, the Wolves are getting stronger from game to game. This can also be seen in the fact that they celebrated their highest win of the season so far last weekend against Bochum (4:0). In addition, they are now unbeaten in five Bundesliga games. With two wins and three draws, they have jumped from 17th to twelfth place.
This twelfth place is also the highest position in the table that VfL has held since the first matchday. Moreover, the infamous knot burst recently. After scoring only five goals in the first seven matchdays, Wolfsburg scored twelve goals in the last five games. So with a good English week, Niko Kovac can end a very turbulent year 2022 quite satisfactorily after all.
Good memories
One sign that speaks for a successful Wolfsburg weekend is the past between VfL and FSV. Indeed, when it comes to Mainz, the Wolves have very good memories. In their last competitive match against Mainz, they inflicted their highest defeat on the 05ers under Svensson (5:0 in Wolfsburg in April). In addition, FSV are one of only three current Bundesliga teams against whom Wolfsburg have a positive away record (6 wins, 6 draws and only 4 defeats).
Wolfsburg facts & analysis
– Unbeaten for 5 games
– 12 goals in last 5 matches
– Last duel won 5:0
Predicted line-up – last update on 3 November 2022
Mainz will rotate a bit compared to the Bayern game. For example, the brutally fit Ingvartsen will move into the first eleven for the recently rather disappointing Burkardt. In addition, Kohr is ready to play again after an infection. He will replace Barreiro Martins in the starting eleven. Otherwise Leitsch and Da Costa are out injured.
In contrast, Kovac will not change anything. All players have been convincing lately and therefore there is no reason to change. In addition, the Croatian coach has almost every player at his disposal, as only Franjic, Paredes and Klinger are out.
Mainz – Wolfsburg direct comparison & Statistics
The direct comparison is slightly in favour of the Wolves. In a total of 32 duels, Wolfsburg celebrated 13 wins and eleven draws. In addition, there are eight Mainz victories. There is something special when looking at Wolfsburg’s away record. This is because FSV is one of only three current Bundesliga teams against whom Wolfsburg has a positive away record (6 wins, 6 draws and only 4 defeats). Mainz also have bad memories of the Wolves. In the last match against the VfL, Mainz conceded their highest defeat under Svensson (0:5 in Wolfsburg in April).
