Werder Bremen vs. Schalke 04
For only the second time in the history of the Bundesliga, two promoted teams will face off in the designated top match on Saturday evening. As part of the 13th matchday of the Bundesliga, SV Werder Bremen will welcome FC Schalke 04 to the Weserstadion at 18:30. So far, this has only been the case in February 2019 when Düsseldorf met Nuremberg (2:1). Our Bremen vs Schalke betting tips will tell you what we think about this match and what our predictions are.
As things stand, only the visitors from Gelsenkirchen have to fear direct relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga. After twelve match days, Bremen have a strong 18 points on their account; only Eintracht Frankfurt were relegated with such a haul in the 2010/11 season. Schalke, on the other hand, have lost all of their last six Bundesliga games, setting a new negative club record in the Bundesliga. Schalke’s new coach Thomas Reis has even lost his last eight Bundesliga games club-wide and season-wide. Will the negative streak continue at the Weserstadion?

Bremen Form & Balance Check
After two 2-0 defeats against Mainz 05 and at SC Freiburg, SV Werder Bremen scored three again on the last matchday of the Bundesliga. In a tough match against the up-and-coming capital club Hertha BSC, Niklas Füllkrüg scored the redeeming 1-0 winner with a powerful header in the 85th minute. It was the 29-year-old’s ninth goal in his twelfth league match. It is not uncommon for Werder to score so late. Bremen have scored almost half of their goals this season (ten out of 21) in the final phase from the 82nd minute onwards.
Füllkrug following in the footsteps of Pizarro and Klose
Nine goals after twelve Bundesliga games – the last time Claudio Pizarro managed that in a Bremen shirt was in the 2011/12 season (when he scored eleven goals). The striker, who has been very injury-prone in recent years, has been spared any injuries so far this season, has been able to play 90 minutes in all games and has finally shown what he is really made of. If he remains injury-free, it is quite possible that Werder Bremen will be the top scorer in the Bundesliga again at the end of the season after more than 15 years (the last time was Miroslav Klose in 2005/06).
Bremen facts & analysis
– 18 points from 12 games
– Last win 1:0 against Hertha
– Füllkrug with 11 goal contributions in 12 games (9 goals, 2 assists)
Schalke form & balance check
There is little prospect of better times at FC Schalke 04 even after the change of coach. The first match under the leadership of Thomas Reis was a narrow 2-1 loss at Hertha BSC in the last minute, but there were few positive signs of forward play in that game or in the recent 2-0 defeat to Freiburg. The squad is simply too thin in terms of quality. The Knappen will need one hundred percent commitment and the necessary luck now and then until the end of the season to at least have a chance to compensate for the deficits of the squad and not be relegated.
Defensively slightly improved
Defensively, however, the team has already made small progress. The first goal conceded in Berlin was the fault of keeper Schwolow, and the second goal conceded in the 0:2 loss in Freiburg was a penalty. Out of the game, S04 has already allowed relatively less. If the defensive personnel situation improves soon, it is probably only a matter of time before FC Schalke 04 can earn the next points on the way to staying in the relegation zone.
Schalke facts & analysis
– 6 points from 12 games
– Last lost 0:2 against Freiburg
– Winless in 34 BL away games
Predicted line-up – last update on 3 November 2022
For Werder, the starting eleven is largely set in stone. Alternatives are Niklas Stark in central defence and Christian Groß in the centre. Apart from that, there should be no surprises, with only Felix Agu and Jean-Manuel Mbom missing through injury.
Jordan Larsson is back in training after a break due to illness and is an option for Saturday. Dominik Drexler also recently reported back to team training. Thomas Ouwejan, on the other hand, is out until the winter break with a torn inner ligament. Otherwise, Marcin Kaminski, Rodrigo Zalazar, Sepp van den Berg, Ibrahima Cisse and Leo Greiml are still missing. Simon Terodde, Kenan Karaman and Tobias Mohr are possible alternatives for the starting eleven.
