Manchester United vs. Newcastle United

Likely Manchester United were pleased that their schedule allows almost no match-free days due to the upcoming 2022 World Cup. Coach Erik ten Hag’s team was thrashed 3:6 by the Skyblues in the Manchester derby. Only four days later, the Red Devils already had the opportunity to make up for this misstep. United won their next competitive match 3:2 at Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus in the Europa League. However, Manchester did not really manage to put the defeat against City out of their minds with this success. Instead, this was achieved with the recent 2-1 compulsory match victory at Everton FC in the Premier League. United will be looking to build on that victory against Newcastle at Old Trafford next Sunday.

Newcastle United are hot on Manchester United’s heels. The Magpies won their last two Premier League duels 4-1 and 5-1 to move up to 6th place. A lot is going right for coach Eddie Howe’s side at the moment. Newcastle want to confirm this on Sunday in Manchester. Read our Man United – Newcastle betting tips to see if they can do so.

Man United Form & Balance Check

Thursday night’s Europa League match at Old Trafford against Omonia Nicosia was the third consecutive must-win in the record books. Erik ten Hag’s team lost only the derby against Man City in their last five games. United won the other four matches. However, Manchester won three of those four in the group stage of the Europa League.

But despite this record, the development in the Premier League is positive. In England, the defeat at the Skyblues is also the only one from (even) the last six encounters. Before the defeat in the city duel, Manchester beat Liverpool FC, Southampton, Leicester and league leaders Arsenal. They also followed that up with a 2-1 away win at Goodison Park on the last matchday.

Defensive under control?

After the Manchester derby, many Red Devils supporters hoped that their team would not fall back into the old patterns from the beginning of the season. On matchday 1 & 2, United conceded a total of six goals. Manchester conceded the same number in one game at the Citizens. But in the games against Liverpool, Southampton, Leicester, Arsenal and Everton, goalkeeper De Gea only conceded a total of three goals. Brentford and Man City alone have conceded ten of the Red Devils’ 13 goals so far. Excluding the derby, United have conceded only three goals in their last five Premier League games. However, due to the nasty clash with Guardiola’s side, the goal tally is negative at 13:15.

Man United facts & analysis

 – Man United are in 5th place in the table with 15 points.
 – Most recently, the Red Devils won 2-1 at Everton.
 – Manchester have only lost the derby against City in their last 5 games.

Newcastle form & balance check

Things are clearly looking up for Newcastle United. The Magpies are unbeaten in four games and in fact have only lost one encounter this season. Only Liverpool FC managed to beat coach Eddie Howe’s team. Among others, Manchester City only played out a 3-3 draw at St James’ Park. This draw was one of five for the Magpies this season. Along with five draws, there are three wins on the record. Newcastle have won two of these in the last two weeks. Most recently, the northerners won 4-1 at Fulham FC and 5-1 at home over Brentford.

Best defence in England

So far, only Manchester City have managed to score more than one goal against Newcastle this season. Eddie Howe’s team has already played three times to nil. In the other games, goalkeeper Pope only conceded one goal. In total, the England international has only conceded nine goals. This means that Newcastle currently have the best defence in the Premier League. However, Man City, Brighton and Everton also conceded only nine goals. With 17 goals, the Magpies have already scored four more goals than Chelsea FC.

Newcastle facts & analysis

 – Newcastle are 6th in the table with 14 points.
 – Most recently, the Magpies won 4-1 and 5-1.
 – With 9 goals conceded, Newcastle have the best defence in the league.

Predicted line-up – last update on 14 October 2022

Erik ten Hag most recently implemented the 4-2-3-1 system that he already had Ajax Amsterdam playing. The Dutchman prefers fast and flexible players, especially in the offensive, which is also the reason why Martial and Rashford are given preference over Cristiano Ronaldo. Newcomer Antony is arriving more and more at Old Trafford and has already scored a few goals.

Eddie Howe also favours an attacking idea of play. The Magpies, however, play a 4-3-3 wing system, mainly controlled by Guimaraes from the centre of midfield. With Wilson, Newcastle play with a real No. 9 who provides danger in the opponent’s penalty area

Man United – Newcastle direct comparison & stats

Newcastle United have failed to win anything at Old Trafford in recent years. The Magpies lost five games in a row at Man United. However, the last duel took place in Newcastle. This ended in a 1-1 draw.

 – Manchester are unbeaten in 5 games against Newcastle.
 – Newcastle last won against the Red Devils three years ago.
 – The Magpies last won at Old Trafford in 2013.
