Liverpool FC vs. Manchester City

This weekend, football fans across Europe are in for a treat! In France, Le Classique will take place and in Spain, the Clásico awaits with the encounter between Real Madrid and Barcelona. If you still can’t get enough, you’ll be pleased to know that the Premier League won’t be missing out either. In England, Liverpool FC will welcome the reigning champions to Anfield Road on Sunday. Manchester City will be another tough test for the Reds in what has been a difficult season so far.

Coach Jürgen Klopp’s team recently lost 3-2 at league leaders Arsenal and are a full 13 points behind the Skyblues. LFC have won just twice so far. Liverpool are simply unrecognisable this season. On top of all the negative noise, there are almost countless injuries in the Reds’ squad. Nevertheless, the hosts can go into the upcoming home game with renewed confidence, as Liverpool swept aside Rangers 7-1 in Scotland in the top flight during the week.

Manchester City actually failed to warm up for their clash with the Reds in the Champions League. The Skyblues only played out a 0-0 draw in Copenhagen on Tuesday. But in the Premier League, Pep Guardiola’s team have won three in a row and are level on points with league leaders Arsenal. Read our Liverpool – Man City betting tips to find out whether they will win at Anfield Road.

Liverpool Form & Balance Check

Liverpool FC swept Glasgow Rangers off the pitch in Scotland 7-1 on Tuesday. For Jürgen Klopp’s team, this could have been the famous chest burster. Before this success, LFC took another setback in their attempt to finally arrive this season. Liverpool lost 3-2 at Arsenal, failing to make up any points on the league leaders. The same meant that the team from the Merseyside has been winless in the Premier League for three games. From eight games so far, Liverpool have only won their clashes with promoted Bournemouth and Newcastle.

Who will stop Haaland?

With LFC already conceding 12 goals and also missing key defenders against Man City, the question is how the Reds will stop Erling Haaland. In the last two appearances against Arsenal and Brighton alone, Klopp’s team conceded a total of six goals. In the last home game, the Seagulls’ Trossard scored a hat-trick. With respect, if a player of this quality is currently capable of scoring three times against the Reds, how will Liverpool stop a striker who has already made 15 budens? But this problem is not only evident in England. The Reds have already conceded six goals in four games in the top flight as well.

Liverpool facts & analysis

 – Liverpool are 10th in the table with 10 points.
 – The Reds are winless in the Premier League three times in a row.
 – On Tuesday, LFC won 7-1 at Rangers.

Man City Form & Balance Check

Manchester City themselves probably don’t know why Tuesday’s game in Copenhagen ended 0-0. The Skyblues scored two goals after 20 minutes, but both goals were disallowed by VAR. In addition, Mahrez missed a penalty and Sergio Gomez saw the red card. The result meant that the seventh consecutive win in a competitive match did not stand in the balance. Given that Guardiola’s team is certain to reach the last 16 and is still unbeaten in the Premier League, the Spaniard can probably overlook this result.

In England, City have won three in a row. A 1-1 draw at Aston Villa was followed by a 3-0 win at Wolverhampton before Man United were shaved 6-3 in the derby. Most recently, the Citizens won 4-0 over Southampton. Manchester City are probably the clear favourites for the first time and clearly the better team ahead of a clash with Liverpool FC. At the moment, there can be no two opinions.

Machinery is rolling

With only nine goals conceded in nine Premier League games and one conceded in four group games in the top flight, Man City are the opposite of Liverpool. However, part of the truth is that the Skyblues were not convincing defensively against Man United. Newcastle also scored three times against City on matchday 3. However, this foul play doesn’t matter when Manchester are able to score goal after goal. With 33 goals, no other team in England scored as often as the Citizens. The second-best attack is provided by league leaders Arsenal with ten fewer goals. 33 goals in nine games result in an average of 3.7 goals per game. That is simply absurd. It becomes even more absurd when you know that Erling Haaland scored 15 times and thus scored just under half of all the Skyblues’ goals.

Man City facts & analysis

 – Man City are 2nd in the table with 22 points.
 – In the Premier League, the Citizens won three games in a row.
 – On Tuesday, the Skyblues played only 0-0 draw in Copenhagen.

Predicted line-up – last update on 14 October 2022

Jürgen Klopp has new injury worries. After Robertson celebrates his return, his partner on the other side got injured against Arsenal. Alexander-Arnold has to rest for the time being and will be replaced by Gomez. Matip also picked up an injury, so Konate will start alongside Van Dijk. In addition, Diaz suffered a knee injury that will keep the Colombian out of action until next year.

Therefore, Jota will start on the left wing and swirl in the attack with Firmino and Salah. Matip, Alexander-Arnold and Diaz will be joined by the long-term injured Oxlade-Chamberlain, Keita, Arthur and Jones. There is no change to the counter-pressing and attacking approach in the Reds’ 4-4-3 system.

The right-back also suffered an injury at Manchester City. Walker had to be substituted in the derby against United and will be out until next year. The English international was last replaced by Akanji. Phillips and Stones are also out. Otherwise, Pep Guardiola has every opportunity to field the best eleven from his point of view. One thing is clear: Erling Haaland will start.
