VfL Wolfsburg vs. VfB Stuttgart
The ball will be rolling through the stadiums of the Bundesliga again next weekend. In the next few days, the eighth matchday is on the schedule in the Beletage of German football and there are again nine exciting games. One of them is between VfL Wolfsburg and the Swabians from Stuttgart. Both have made a modest start to the new season, to say the least, and you can read what we think about this match in detail in our Wolfsburg – Stuttgart tip.
A look at the table after the first seven matchdays will not please either team. The hosts from Wolfsburg are clearly lagging behind their own expectations and with five points, the Lower Saxons are in penultimate place. If we believe the rumours, then coach Niko Kovac has a real final game ahead of him on Saturday. The upcoming opponents from Stuttgart are also on five points and thus in 16th place, so we can expect a six-point game and both teams will be playing accordingly.

Wolfsburg Form & Balance Check
There is unrest at VfL Wolfsburg, once again we almost have to say. For two seasons now, things have not been going well for the team from Lower Saxony. Everything was supposed to get better with Niko Kovac, but the former FC Bayern and Frankfurt Eintracht coach doesn’t seem to have really arrived in the Autostadt yet.
Five points after seven games currently means only 17th place. Perhaps the Wolfsburg team is too inexperienced, because with an average age of 25.2 years, only the upcoming opponents from Stuttgart have sent a younger team onto the pitch. On the last matchday, the team travelled to Berlin. The Wolves were defeated 0:2 by league leaders Union.
Little power on the offensive, defensively too vulnerable
The two big problem areas for the Wolves are the defence and the offence. When looking at the bare numbers, then it quickly becomes clear that coach Kovac must finally get his attack going. The five goals are certainly not a yield with which the VfL can be satisfied. To put a bit of a protective hand on the VfL, it also requires a look at their opponents so far. Five of the seven games were against teams that are represented in the European Cup this season. The coming weeks will therefore not only be decisive for the Wolves, but also for coach Niko Kovac personally.
Wolfsburg facts & analysis
– 17th place with 5 points
– Last lost 0:2 against Union
– Only 1 win to show
Stuttgart form & balance check
Many experts predicted before the season that VfB Stuttgart would have a hard time this season. After the first seven matchdays, it is clear that the Swabians will probably have to deal with relegation until the end. If we take a closer look at the games so far, it becomes clear where the problems lie. Together with the bottom team from Bochum, VfB is the only team in the Bundesliga still waiting for its first win of the season. Five draws and two defeats have been recorded by the Swabians so far and coach Matarazzo cannot really be blamed for much.
Still undefeated away
The two defeats of the season were at home. With three points, the Swabians collected more than half of their points on foreign grounds. With the departure of goal-scorer Kalajdzic, the 2007 German champions are missing an important playmaker in the penalty area. Coach Matarazzo seems to have told his players to shoot from a distance. Stuttgart have scored three of their seven goals this season from outside the penalty area.
Stuttgart facts & analysis
– Still without a win this season.
– Drawn all 3 away games played
– Last lost against Frankfurt
Predicted line-up – last update on 29 September 2022
Wolfsburg are likely to field another 4-3-3 in the six-point match against VfB Stuttgart. Coach Kovac will have Baku play at right back again, Otavio will get his chance on the left. Waldschmidt, Nmecha and Brekalo are expected to do the job in attack. Captain Arnold will once again close down the centre.
The upcoming opponents from Stuttgart will be looking for speed. Silas in particular should open up the necessary spaces for Guirassy with his speed. With Führich on the left and Sosa on the right, good crosses should be guaranteed.
