Eintracht Frankfurt vs. VfL Wolfsburg
After a very exciting week with many interesting duels in international competition, no less exciting games await us in the Bundesliga. Eintracht from Frankfurt will meet VfL Wolfsburg after their first match in the Champions League. The Wolves are currently one of the biggest disappointments of the season, sitting second to last in the table with two points from five games. After an expensive summer of transfers, this result is of course doubly bitter. The club management is still backing the new coach, but the question is, for how much longer?
The last few weeks have actually been very positive for Eintracht, as the first win of the season in Bremen was followed by a really strong performance and a 4-0 win against RB Leipzig. Then, during the week, the opening game in the top flight awaited and Eintracht was put in a proper damper. Frankfurt lost 3-0 at home and is already under pressure. The performance was actually solid, but the mistakes were punished ice-cold. Find out whether we think Eintracht will recover directly in this Frankfurt – Wolfsburg tip.

Frankfurt Form & Balance Check
It seems to be another very turbulent season in Frankfurt. After a very bitter opening defeat against FC Bayern, the team caught itself and remained unbeaten for four games. Especially the games against Werder and Leipzig were convincing. Against the promoted team, Eintracht showed the potential of its offensive for the first time. On the last matchday, the SGE then played Leipzig down, winning 4:0 against desolate Saxons. Everyone thought that things would take off now, but hardly anyone expected a 0:3 at the start of the Champions League. Even though the performance was not bad, the result is of course enormously sobering.
Defensively just too vulnerable
If you take a look at the number of goals conceded, the SGE officials will not be happy. The defeat against Sporting was the third game this season in which Frankfurt conceded three goals. This brings Eintracht’s total to 14 goals conceded after seven competitive matches, including the cup match against Magdeburg. Even though the goals came relatively late against the Portuguese, the absence of Sebastian Rode, who would certainly have helped with his tackling strength, was particularly noticeable. Nevertheless, the whole team must improve defensively if the season is to be better nationally than the past one.
Frankfurt facts & analysis
– Unbeaten for four games in the league
– Frankfurt are currently in tenth place in the table
– The SGE conceded the third most goals in the league so far
Wolfsburg form & balance check
The signs were actually good for a strong season, but things didn’t really go well for the Wolves from the start. On the first matchday, they only managed a lucky point against Werder, and on the following matchday, VfL lost to the record champions. Wolfsburg also failed to win against Schalke 04, the second team to be promoted, and after this match the first unrest broke out in the club. But it was to get worse, as Wolfsburg lost both the away game in Leipzig and the past duel at their own stadium with FC Köln. As a result, the team stands on two points after five matchdays.
Does VfL lack leadership players?
Already last season, there was a lack of a player who leads the way. Actually, a Maxi Arnold has the potential to do that, but the German midfielder is also getting infected by the uncertainty. The departure of Xaver Schlager also weighs heavily, and Svanberg is not yet an equal replacement. The biggest problem, however, is the inconsistency in defence. Cologne created chances very easily, there were huge holes in Wolfsburg’s defence. It is still clearly too early to declare a state of emergency, but if the Wolves are not careful, they will be extremely thick in the relegation battle.
Wolfsburg facts & analysis
– Still winless this season
– VfL lost both games away from home so far
– The Wolves have yet to score a goal away from home
Predicted line-up – last update on 8 September 2022
Before this match, there is uncertainty on both sides about the possible line-ups. Frankfurt’s starting eleven will depend on how much strength they have left after the game against Sporting. Sebastian Rode will definitely be absent. Kolo Muani might get a break, as the Frenchman has always played from the start in recent weeks.
For Wolfsburg, Niko Kovac has a few options, only Yannick Gerhardt will probably not be ready for action yet. Kruse has only been convincing to a limited extent in recent weeks, which is why Brekalo or Kaminski are also options.
