Borussia Dortmund vs. TSG Hoffenheim
Borussia Dortmund will host TSG Hoffenheim at Signal Iduna Park on Friday evening at 20:30 to kick off Matchday 5 of the Bundesliga. Both teams have got off to an identically good start with three wins from their first four games and will be doing everything they can to temporarily take the lead in the standings with the next three points. Our Dortmund vs. Hoffenheim report will now tell you who we think will be more likely to do so on Friday.
From a statistical point of view, this match points to a home victory for the Black and Yellows. BVB have won both of their last two meetings with TSG 3:2 and are unbeaten at home on a Friday night for an incredible 32 Bundesliga games. Furthermore, Hoffenheim coach Andre Breitenreiter has coached Dortmund four times and has lost each of those four games.
However, after three successes in a row, TSG will travel to the Ruhr region with plenty of self-confidence. With another win, the visitors would even set a new record start, Hoffenheim have never managed four wins in the first five Bundesliga matchdays.

Dortmund Form & Balance Check
BVB seem to have recovered quite well from their last-minute defeat to Werder Bremen, recording their third win in their fourth Bundesliga match at Berlin’s Olympiastadion last weekend. In the 1-0 win against Hertha BSC, newcomer Anthony Modeste scored in the 32nd minute. The goal was set up by Salih Özcan, with whom the Frenchman has already played successfully together at 1. FC Köln.
The combination ‘Özcan’s assist, Modeste’s goal’ never happened in the Effzeh kit, but it did in Dortmund at the first attempt. The fact that it was only enough for this one goal in the capital was not due to poor offensive play, unlike against Bremen, but almost exclusively due to the negligent use of chances. BVB’s xGoals value after 90 minutes was a staggering 2.97.
Modeste has broken the mould?
In total, it was Dortmund’s tenth competitive goal this season and all ten goals were scored by different players. On the one hand, it’s good to spread the responsibility in the offensive on several shoulders, but on the other hand, a top team like Dortmund also needs a reliable striker who regularly scores his goals. If Modeste’s knot has finally broken after his debut goal, he could slip into this role immediately. Given the tight programme of the next few weeks (Hoffenheim, Copenhagen, Leipzig, Man City), it would be extremely important for BVB to have an in-form striker in their ranks.
Dortmund facts & analysis
– 9 points from 4 games
– Last win 1:0 at Hertha BSC
– 10 competitive goals – 10 different scorers
Hoffenheim form & balance check
The visitors from Hoffenheim have also made a very good start to the season with nine points from their first four games. Only on Matchday 1 in Mönchengladbach, where TSG had to play with a shorthanded team from the 19th minute on, no points were scored. Especially towards the end of the match, the Foals made use of this advantage and won 3:1. Andre Breitenreiter’s team followed this up with a spectacular 3:2 away win in Bochum on matchday 2, in which the Sinsheim side turned an early 0:2 deficit from the 10th and 13th minute into a victory.
Also TSG with many goal scorers
On the past two matchdays, Andrej Kramaric & Co. picked up their next wins in Leverkusen (0:3) and at home against Augsburg (1:0), this time even without conceding a goal. The team makes an extremely solid impression and, like BVB, is very difficult to count on the offensive. Six different professionals have scored seven goals in the Bundesliga so far this season.
After three wins in a row, Hoffenheim coach Andre Breitenreiter even has his sights set on a personal record. He has only managed four wins in a row as a Bundesliga coach once before, seven years ago with FC Schalke 04. But as mentioned at the beginning, he has never been able to defeat BVB in four attempts so far.
Hoffenheim facts & analysis
– 9 points from 4 games
– Last win 1:0 against Augsburg
– Only BL team to win last 3 matches
Predicted line-up – last update on 31 August 2022
BVB could start unchanged compared to the away win in Berlin. However, it would be conceivable that Mo Dahoud returns to the starting eleven and/or that Jamie Bynoe-Gittens plays for the stricken Karim Adeyemi. Donyell Malen will only make it to the bench at best. Apart from Nico Schulz and Manuel Akanji, who have not been considered, only Sebastien Haller is currently missing.
TSG will probably not make any changes compared to their recent successes. We don’t see any potential for a surprise at any position at the moment. Ihlas Bebou, Benjamin Hübner, Philipp Pentke and Ermin Bicakcic are still missing due to injury.
