Liverpool FC vs. Crystal Palace

Matchday 2 of the Premier League is upon us and Jürgen Klopp’s Reds are under a bit of pressure early in the season. They have already dropped their first two points on the road in their opening 2-2 draw with Fulham, and they will be desperate for their first win in their first home game against Crystal Palace. Kick-off is at 21:00 on Monday evening.

The visitors from the capital, on the other hand, started the new year with a defeat. In the first of many London derbies, the Eagles were beaten 2-0 by Arsenal FC. In view of the tough programme in the next few weeks (Liverpool, Aston Villa, Man City), Patrick Vieira’s team is threatened with an absolute false start. Against Liverpool, winning a point seems almost impossible. The last ten duels with the Reds were all lost with a goal difference of 6:31.

Whether we expect the next defeat against Liverpool on Monday and what predictions we would make for the last Premier League match of Matchday 2, you can find out now in our Liverpool vs Crystal Palace tip.

Liverpool Form & Balance Check

This is certainly not how Jürgen Klopp had envisaged the start to the new season. After a good performance in the Community Shield against Manchester City, which was ultimately rewarded with a 3:1 victory over their rivals, the Reds dropped two important points in their first Premier League home game of the season. The 2-2 draw with Fulham could now be either an early slip-up or the first sign of a less than stellar season.

Mané leaves big shoes to fill

After all, Liverpool had to let go one of the most important players in the entire squad in Sadio Mané in the summer. Darwin Núñez, Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino are of course also excellent attackers, but Mané still brought qualities to the pitch that the team will surely miss. Much like Bayern without Lewandowski, the Reds will have to reinvent themselves to some extent this year and, in particular, integrate Núñez’s strengths into their own game in the best possible way.

Liverpool facts & analysis

 – Played 2-2 against Fulham in the opener.
 – Community Shield win against Man City 3:1
 – Won last 10 duels with Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace Form & Balance Check

The visitors from London finished the last season in twelfth place in the table and can therefore look back on a year without relegation worries. In the two previous years, the Eagles were slightly lower in the final table. But the signs are not bad that the capital club can play another solid year. All the key players have stayed on board and with Cheick Doucouré (RC Lens) and Chris Richards (FC Bayern), the managers have landed two promising new players.

Derby defeat at the start

A good start in the Premier League, however, did not come after the successful test matches (including 4-2 against Montpellier and 3-0 against Queens Park Rangers). With newcomer Doucouré in the starting eleven, the Eagles conceded the first goal against Arsenal after a corner in the 20th minute. Both after the opening goal and in the second half, the Gunners conceded more and more of the game to their opponents. Palace failed to capitalise on this and consequently conceded the second goal in the 85th minute.

Crystal Palace facts & analysis

 – 1st matchday lost 0:2 against Arsenal.
 – With Doucouré and Richards only two real newcomers brought in
 – Last win against Liverpool away in April 2017 (2:1)

Predicted line-up – last update on 13 August 2022

The Reds will have to do without Thiago in the coming weeks, so youngster Harvey Elliott could slide into the starting eleven. We also expect Nunez to feature in the starting eleven for the first time.

Palace coach Patrick Vieira relied on a newcomer in Doucouré in the starting eleven, with ex-Munich man Richards taking a place on the bench. He could field the same team again against Liverpool
