Liverpool FC vs. Manchester City
Liverpool FC and Manchester City will meet in the final of the English Community Shield, the equivalent of the German Super Cup (cup winner against champion). Here, however, not only FA Cup winners and Premier League champions face each other, but also arguably the two best teams in Europe.
The two rivals already played out the Community Shield in 2019, back then with the better end for City, who won 5:4 on penalties. After three spectacular clashes last season (2:2, 2:2 & 3:2 for LFC), we are looking forward to another great game on Saturday. Kick-off at the King Power Stadium, home of Community Shield title holders Leicester City, is at 18:00 Central European Time.

Liverpool Form & Balance Check
One point and a worse goal difference separated LFC from the Championship after 38 matchdays of the past Premier League season. Although the Reds did not lose a league game in 2022 (16 wins & 3 draws) they ended up empty-handed.
While City triumphed in the league, however, Liverpool secured the two titles in the English cup competitions (FA Cup and League Cup). In the semi-finals of the FA Cup, the Reds beat Man City in a direct duel (3:2). They also reached the final of the Champions League. There, however, they lost 1-0 to Real Madrid, despite their superiority.
Nuñez show against Leipzig
Not only Manchester City signed a new, young super striker in Erling Haaland in the summer. LFC were not completely idle either and signed Darwin Nuñez for around € 75 million transfer fee from Benfica Lisbon. While the Uruguayan failed to score in his first two test matches against Man United (0:4) and Crystal Palace (2:0), he almost single-handedly destroyed RB Leipzig (5:0) after coming on as a substitute. The 23-year-old scored four goals in the second half. If he can produce a similar performance against Manchester City, he can make the exiled Sadio Mané a thing of the past. The Senegalese has scored in each of the last three encounters with the Citizens.
Liverpool facts & analysis
– Won last two Test matches to nil.
– None of the last 19 Premier League matches lost (16 wins & 3 draws)
– Scored in each of last 19 Premier League games
Man City form & balance check
In a dramatic finale, the Skyblues secured their fourth Premier League championship in the last five years against Aston Villa on the final matchday. They were 2-0 down until the 75th minute of the game, but led by Ilkay Gündogan (76th, 81st) they still managed to win the game 3-2. However, City were unstoppable since the beginning of November. They won 23 of their last 28 Premier League games (four draws & one defeat). And the Skyblues also seemed to be the measure of all things internationally, but were eliminated in the semi-finals of the Champions League against Real Madrid. After a flattering 3:4 defeat for Madrid in Manchester, City also led 1:0 for a long time in the second leg, but a late brace by Rodrygo (90′, 90+1′) saved Real from going into extra time, where Karim Benzema scored the final 3:1 and City’s elimination via penalty.
Haaland makes dream debut
In Erling Haaland, the Citizens signed one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe during the summer break. As in Dortmund, the young Norwegian did not need a long period of adjustment in Manchester, but scored directly on his debut. In the test match against FC Bayern Munich, he scored the golden goal of the day (12′) for a 1:0 final score. Shortly after the opening goal, the game had to be interrupted for almost an hour due to thunderstorms, but this had no effect on the game. City were the dominant team from the start and throughout the match. This is also evidenced by the shot ratio of 22:3.
Man City facts & analysis
– Won both previous test matches (2-1 against Club America & 1-0 against Bayern Munich).
– Lost 1-0 to Leicester City in the FA Community Shield last year.
– Lost last meeting with Liverpool 2:3
Predicted line-up – last update on 28 July 2022
When it comes to the first title of the season, we expect both teams to be at their best. Both Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola are advocates of the 4-3-3 system. With Darwin Nuñez and Erling Haaland, both teams also have a new, young, tall, yet fast striker in their own ranks.
While Liverpool have a little more pace on the wings with Mohamed Salah and Luis Díaz, City’s wingers, Riyad Mahrez and Jack Grealish, are more playmaking. With Ilkay Gündogan, Phil Foden and John Stones all absent from the Citizens’ trip to America, we don’t expect any of the three to feature in the starting eleven.
