ATP Tournament in Stuttgart, Quarterfinals, Friday, 10.06.2022
Wimbledon is just around the corner, what could be better for your self-confidence than a tournament win a few days earlier? Many tennis stars are competing at the Boss Open in Stuttgart these days. The fans are especially looking forward to the German starters.
After Alexander Zverev’s serious injury, others have to pull the coals out of the fire. One of them will play his quarter-final on Friday. In my Bonzi Otte tip, you can find out why I think the local hero is capable of great things!
Often he was close until the last consequence was missing – what will happen now if Oscar Otte also has a bit of luck? The 28-year-old could celebrate one of his greatest successes ever in Stuttgart.
Otte and the tiebreak, the two are currently best friends on the Neckar. Twice he competed, twice he advanced with 7-6, 7-6! Against colleague Daniel Altmaier, one might have expected a clearer result, but in the 2nd round?
Against top star Denis Shapovalov, Otte entered as a clear underdog, but quickly showed the Canadian who was calling the shots. Again he kept his nerve and showed Shapovalov that his service games are currently brutally strong.
Daniel Altmaier could not break at all against Otte, Shapovalov only once. Otte, on the other hand, made the most of his only break chance in the round of 16, and in the end he celebrated a great victory at his premiere in Stuttgart.
85% points won on the first serve, whoever achieves such a yield twice in a row does not need to hide in the quarter-finals. According to the world rankings, a duel on an equal footing is on the cards.
Benjamin Bonzi, his opponent, is ranked 58, Otte himself number 61. A direct comparison would be interesting at this point, but the only duel was not played in the main draw, but in a qualifier.
A year ago in Lyon, also on clay, the German won by a razor-thin margin 4-6, 7-6, 6-4. Such a result would also suit him wonderfully in these days of Stuttgart
The Frenchman is also competing in Stuttgart for the first time and skilfully avoided the likes of Denis Shapovalov. Feliciano Lopez was his first opponent, who was clearly beaten 6-4, 6-1.
Arthur Rinderknecht was only able to annoy Bonzi in the first set, in the end the favourite snatched a 7-6, 6-2. He served ten aces in each set, even though at 1.83m he is not one of the tallest, he is exactly ten centimetres short of Otte.
Bonzi has not really been able to draw attention to himself this year. He has won one Challenger, but the competition was very limited. At the French Open he recently lost to Frances Tiafoe in the 1st round.
My Bonzi Otte Tip
Oscar Otte could hit the big time in Stuttgart. Not only did he show immensely strong nerves twice, but he pulled off his service game flawlessly until the end. 85% points won on first serve speak volumes
After the German beat a player from the top 10 for the first time, my tip for Friday is:
Oscar Otte wins against Benjamin Bonzi!
