The circuit of the Monte Carlo GP

The Monte Carlo Formula 1 GP is run at the Circui de Monaco.

This is a circuit that is “created” especially for the Grand Prix and runs through the Monte Carlo and La Condamine districts of Monaco.

To prepare the track for the GP, all roads and access routes in the Principality are closed days in advance. Pit lane, crash barriers, mobile curbs, fences and extensive grandstand facilities, designed as flying structures, complete the 3.337-kilometre race track.

What makes the Monte Carlo Formula 1 GP so special?

As an imposing street circuit through the urban canyons of Monaco, the Monte Carlo Formula 1 GP circuit offers virtually no run-off areas and is therefore one of the most dangerous race tracks in Formula 1, despite the rather low average speed compared to other circuits.

Former world champion Nelson Piquet once compared driving on the Monaco circuit to “flying a helicopter in your living room”.

As the circuit is very narrow and winding, there are few opportunities to overtake – which means that qualifying is very important at the Monaco GP.

There are many key places at the Monaco GP. One is the “Boulevard Louis II” road that runs along the shore of the harbour and leads into the tunnel under the Fairmont Hotel. The riders are exposed to a stark contrast between dark and light as they exit the tunnel.

After the tunnel exit comes the fastest part of the course.

Imopsant is also the passage “Rascasse”. Named after a restaurant, which in turn is named after a lionfish. There, guests can follow the race directly at the crash barrier and thus as close as nowhere else in Formula 1.

The first Formula 1 race was held in Monaco in 1950, won by Juan Manuel Fangio. Monte Carlo’s record winner is Ayrton Senna with 6 victories. The 2021 race was won by Max Verstappen.

Who is favourite for the 2022 Monte Carlo Grand Prix?

Who will win the 2022 Monte Carlo Grand Prix?

Based on recent results, Max Verstappen is the heavy favourite to win the 2022 Monte Carlo GP.

The reigning world champion has won the last three races at Imola, Miami and Barcelona, making a total of four of the six World Championship rounds so far.

In addition, Verstappen has also taken the lead in the drivers’ world championship standings with the victory in Barcelona. What’s more, Verstappen won the Monaco GP last year.

Who could be a threat to Verstappen at the Monaco Grand Prix this Sunday?

Ferrari star Charles Leclerc will probably be considered the biggest opponent in the canyons of the Principality. The Ferrari driver is Monegasque and will be fully motivated for his home Grand Prix.

Monte Carlo GP betting odds even have Leclerc as a slight favourite ahead of the 1st practice session.

Because he knows his way around at home and because the Ferrari can set the fastest lap in qualifying – and therefore starting from pole position would already be half the battle for victory?

Behind the top duo of Verstappen and Leclerc are Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez – their team-mates – as well as the two Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.
