If you want to follow the matches of this 3rd round, you have to get up really early by now. Saturday starts at 04:00 with the duel between Benoit Paire and Stefanos Tsitsipas, where almost everyone favours the Greek.
At the same time, top favourite Daniil Medvedev does not want to show any weakness. His opponent sounds simple: Botic van de Zandschulp. But be careful: It was exactly him who stole Medvedev’s only set at the recent US Open!

He won 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 against Mikael Ymer in round 1, but then lost the first set against Sebastian Baez. It was closer than Tsitsipas would have liked at 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.
1.12 to 6.80, when he meets Benoit Paire, the odds know no surprises. Is it because Tsitsipas won two straight duels in 2021, conceding only seven games? With the Frenchman, you never really know what you’re going to get.
He needed all five sets against Thiago Monteiro in Round 1, but whoever then wins 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 against Grigor Dimitrov has made a name for himself. And that despite the fact that he has already committed 22 double faults in two rounds!

Can the top seed be stopped at this Australian Open? The title probably only goes through Daniil Medvedev. The Russian is in good form, but is still allowing too much. That was already evident towards the end of his 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 against Henri Laaksonen.
He held his nerve against Nick Kyrgios in a heated match, winning 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. He has already had 14 break chances, which was once less. But the 31 aces in round 2 were of course very strong.
What can Botic van de Zandschulp do? Nothing, if the bookies have their way. 15.00 to 1.01, that is more than clear. But: The up-and-coming Dutchman inflicted Medvedev’s only set loss at the US Open 2021.
He stormed all the way to the quarter-finals then, so you shouldn’t underestimate him. At this AO, he beat Jan-Lennard Struff in three sets, then his second opponent Richard Gasquet retired.

Number 22 against number 18, everything smells like a real thriller between Taylor Fritz and Roberto Bautista-Agut. Even the odds, which at 1.85 to 1.90 are very narrowly in favour of the Spaniard. Probably also because of the direct comparison.
He is clearly in the lead with 5:1. Fritz, however, has caught up. The 1.96m man has 37 aces and has beaten both Maximilian Marterer and Frances Tiafoe in three sets. He also showed good nerves, as evidenced by winning two tiebreaks.
Three times in a row he was eliminated in the 3rd round, that should not happen to him this time. Bautista-Agut, however, seems to be in top form. If he had had minimal problems against Stefano Travaglia at 7-6, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, he improved in round 2.
He beat Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-1, 6-0, 6-3 on the fly, conceding just one break chance to the German. In 2019, the Spaniard made it past the last 16, so the current target should be clear.

Australian Open today 23.01: Taro Daniel – Jannik Sinner (07:00 h)
120 against 10 – will this be a clear-cut duel? Japan’s Daniel Taro is one of the biggest surprises of this tournament, reaching the 3rd round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career!
So he made it through the qualifiers without losing a set. In the main draw, he first knocked out Tomas Barrios with a clear 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 before meeting the great Andy Murray. Daniel kept his cool, winning 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 and fending off nine breaks.
Jannik Sinner, tenth in the world rankings, is of course a different level, he is even considered a secret favourite for the title. At his 3rd Australian Open, it is already his best result. He has not yet had to play Taro Daniel.
Neither Joao Sousa (6-4, 7-5, 6-1) nor Steve Johnson (6-2, 6-4, 6-3) could really threaten the South Tyrolean in the main draw. He gave up three break chances, which was also strong.

Is Andrey Rublev getting one of his favourite opponents right in the 3rd round? The world No. 6 has won all of his last four duels against Marin Cilic, dropping only one set. He is also favoured now, going into the match with 1.30 to 3.50.
Rublev first defeated Gianluca Mager 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, then secured an equally convincing 6-4, 6-2, 6-0 win over Ricardas Berankis. So in both duels he got stronger and stronger at the back.
Marin Cilic had no problems in his 1st round match against Emilio Gomez (6-1, 6-3, 6-2), but Norbert Gombos made it a little more difficult for the Croat at 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6. However, 37 aces in both games showed how well the 33-year-old continues to serve.
Cilic has reached the last 16 many times, and four years ago he almost managed a real highlight here in Melbourne. He played his way to the final, where he was beaten by Roger Federer in five sets!
